Tribute To A South Dakota Barrel Racer

Runaway Wheel Chair

I got a good friend who’s a real champ,
She lives in the local assisted living camp.
This gal was a professional can chaser,
Otherwise known as a barrel racer.

She had a wreck at the state fair one year,
Although it changed her we still hold her dear.
Coming back across the finish line her horse died,
Even though it crippled her she sure ain’t lost her pride.

That was the last time she rode in that event,
Now she just sets around and dreams up entertainment.
She says she’s bored most of the time,
And never thought thinking could turn into a crime.

She decided one day she was going to make a little trip,
Packed a lunch and out the door she did slip.
Hoping no one would see her she took that chance,
Wheeling her way down the road headed for the ranch.
Wanted to make sure her barrel racin saddle was still there.
For the next time she got entered up at the fair.

Someone seen her and hollered, get back here you runaway,
But she just wheeled faster, enjoying the play.
Said she was doing good till someone called the cop,
He ran her down and made her stop.

He took her back and she give him a kiss on the cheek.
It kind of gave her day a little peak.
Now she says she’s in deep trouble with the boss,
Cause she snuck out like a runaway hoss.

Said it sure was fun at the time,
Didn’t know why everyone else treats it like a crime.
For the inspiration she has given, we all need to thank the Good Lord,
And then everyone go visit her so she ain’t so dang bored.

Written for my long time friend Janice Deal
Who resides at the Assisted living center in Kimball SD
