It's my paranoia,I'm sure, but it's odd that there's been no steelwork beyond the third floor despite the steel up to that level having been in place for some weeks. Up to the third floor are the shops. Up from that are the flats. And no update on the website since March. |

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is no progress beyond the third floor - I like it as it is. I expect it will only be a matter of time though before the towers go up and the skies over the Hayes darken! |

I would imagine they are going to concentrate on the 3 floors of shops. If they can get the roof of the top shopping level on, it will give them greater flexibility when it comes to erecting the steel work for 'Luxury Apartments*' Or maybe they have run out of money/workers/steel * do they build any other sort these days? |

Yes Zach....they also build...... 'Happy Go Lucky Apartments' I kid you not, for that is the description on the banner outside the building (to be demolished) opposite Cardiff Bay train station. It's going to be called Dixie. |

...and there's me thinking it was Saint David's 2. Now all has become clear. I wouldn't mind betting that they will finish all of the steelwork up to the full height of the shopping centre before they start on the 4th to 10th storeys. |

Two big cranes are being removed from the SD2 site over the next couple of weeks. I guess because they wont be needed for a while: http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/cardiff-news/2008/05/15/city-streets-to-close-for-cranes-removal-91466-20910986/ |

Apparently the public artworks, that in time will be around the SD2 site, are to be made public in an exhibition in the museum over the next few weeks. Anyone taking a camera? http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/cardiff-news/2008/05/20/city-project-art-91466-20936196/ They are removed on 29th May. |

The SD2 public art proposals at the Museum are certainly worth checking out if you're in the area. As you go through the main Musuem entrance the exhibition is just ahead and to your left. Half the proposals are for artworks inside the shopping arcades. The other proposals are for works to be situated outdoors where Mill Lane meets The Hayes - these include a huge tree sculpture, a wave/water feature and a giant bodice framework. |

Having now seen the exhibition (which is very small, btw) I also advise everyone to go: and take a camera (which I didnt do). Some of these things are massive and will really frame the whole of the SD2 / Hayes experience, much more than, say, the John Lewis cladding. Basically, there are 3 works that are approved and will go ahead, and about 6/7 competing options for a massive sculpture outside of the new library. A quick run through (but i'd like to say, i didnt have as much time as I'd like and the info provided is uneven): Confirmed artwork: A video installation in the old arcades about the history of the arcades. Hard to tell, but I think this will take up a whole shop front window. Some tiles under the dome where SD1 meets SD2 One I couldnt quite work out where it will be - Bute Street square? Basically I think they are going to put lights on the old carpark opposite the cinema/CIA. Which is odd cos i thought they were going to knock it down... I could be wrong on this. Competing sculptures for the new Hayes: A row of metal arches that get lower (representing waves) that have lights shining on them. It reacts to people in the Hayes around it in some way. A massive bowl with water in it. When the Hayes is empty there is not much water and it will be still, as the hayes fills up more water is pumped into the bowl and it gets waves etc until it spills over, sometime to drain quickly, sometimes to stay. There will be cameras around the hayes to work out how busy it is. Its meant to cause uncertainty in people about whether it is going to spill or not, and catch people out sometimes when it does. A massive metal plinth with huge staggered glass tubes above it, that fill up with water in time with the change in the tidal flows in cardiff bay. it also has speakers underneath nearby seats that provide sound effects and also reacts to the people around it somehow. A massive hollow bronze dress to represent femininity and counter the masculinity of the Mill Stadium. A massive metal tree with no leaves on it. Three massive piles of stones. A massive spike pointing at an angle and a massive metal ring. The has lots of projectors on it that shine bits of text onto the ground below: words that reflect cardiff and phrases from welsh poetry. Some are big, some are small. By standing near it the words shine on the faces/bodies of the people, and by putting your body in different places you can spell different sentences on you (a bit like one of those fridge magnet sets with words that you can order). There is lots of complexity with this one, and more stuff than I can remember. According to the people manning the exhibition this is the forerunner with the public. There might have been another one but I've forgotten it. Given some photos, we could argue about these for months. Final decision comes September ish. |

"A massive hollow bronze dress to represent femininity and counter the masculinity of the Mill Stadium. A massive metal tree with no leaves on it. Three massive piles of stones." Hopefully it won't be any of the above; they all sound very predictable and boring. I'm hoping to get down there and see the exhibition tomorrow so I can make my mind up |

The public art project that is recording a history of the Hayes/arcades to put on touch screens around the Hayes is having a day event in June to get people/the public/you? to meet with them and possibly become part of the recording team if you want, taking photos/recording interviews to be used in the art project. Lots more text about this particular SD2 art project on here: http://www.arcadesproject.org/ |

Not suitable here, but there's a fantastic water feature/full blown European style cascading fountain in the middle of Birmingham by the Pallasades shopping centre. I couldn't believe how recent it was, but it looks amazing and shows that it is still possible to build public features that will still look good in 100+ years time. |

Shame about the Pallasades.. what a depressing reminder of the 1970s/80s. My housemate Geoff and I had a trip to Brum after visiting old college friends and got caught in the timewarp and lost between the £ shops and Shaws the Drapers.. urrgh! |

Yeh, it is a bunker, especially compared to the public square with fountain, fantastic old buildings like the town hall(?)next to it and Bullring down the road. I thought it'd be ripe for redevelopment, a gateway to the city centre proper from the Symphony Hall, but when I was there last July they were giving it a very modest £10m revamp. |

I think you mean "The Floosie in the Jacuzzi" as it's known locally. It sets Victoria Square off really well. Something like that in Cardiff would be amazing, but I'm not sure where- the space outside SD2 would seem too small. Incidently, it's not next to the Pallasades- that's down the street, above New Stret Station. I heard that the redevelopment of New Street was severely restricted because of the expense of evicting the tenants from the Pallasades. It really is the most god-foresaken complex, makes you grateful for Cardiff Central! Some of the options for SD2 sound really intersting, but I'm having trouble visualising the more bizare-sounding ones. |

Now that is something severly lacking in Cardiff city centre. Sure we have the odd water feature down the bay, but a decent fountain like this at the junction of Mill lane, Caroline Street and the Hayes is what is needed. There is plenty of space at this point or at the junction of Hills Street, Working Street and Trinity Street. Why not build a water feature out of John Bachelor

I've always thought Central Square, when redeveloped could have something like that. Imagine having a large water fountain as you walk out of the station and some proper seating and trees too. That would solve our 'first impressions' problem! |

For Cardiff , particularly given its proximity to St Mary St, it could be the boozy in the jacuzzi, or if it's just plain ugly the stool in the pool. |

The John Batchelor idea's not a bad one. Imagine him in a large concrete tub, beer glass on his head,a garden hose in his hand, dribbling water into an upturned cone in the tub. This would be (a)a dramatic re working of the traditional John Batchelor themes and (b)be considerably more interesting than the City Hall vertical hosepipes or the LGA fallen down ones. |

I was having a look at the Liverpool One development that partially opened yesterday on t. Some of the stores that have signed up or reportedly signed up to SD2 are at this scheme as well so it will be interesting to see if some of them we haven't yet got will also sign up to SD2. http://www.liverpool-one.com/website/stores_onboard.html I hope the scheme works well for them because the city has been living in Manchester's shadows for too long. Here's a shot of the John Lewis store they are getting. I have to say, I prefer what we are getting (if the SD2 website and the general look of the cladding is what I think we'll get).

From the planning applications: 08/00766/C Full Planning Permission Expected Decision Level: Received: 21/05/2008 Ward: CATHAYS Case Officer: Chris Ellis Applicant: Cardiff County Council, County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff Agents: P Mannings, Southgate House, Wood Street, Cardiff, , CF10 1EW Proposal: TO INSTALL A LARGE PUBLIC INFORMATION SCREEN AT FIRST FLOOR LEVEL ON THE SOUTH ELEVATION OF THE BALCONY At: St Davids Centre, Working Street, Cathays, Cardiff So it seems we'll be getting a big screen like on Queen Street. It would be good if they used it to show sporting events as well but the location doesn't seem suitable for this. |

I'd much rather see some information about the 50%+ of the building that does not overlook the Hayes. There seem to be no pictures in the public domain, and the model in the apartments sales shop just turns to transparent plastic abstract shapes once it gets close to the car park; although it does have some of the area between SD1 & 2 (although none of the new SD1 or the joining bridge). A friend of mine who works in an architects practice, and has worked on a similar (although slightly smaller) scheme to SD2 elsewhere in the country, tells me that its possible that no one really knows exactly. There will be a plan, but details like the size of the retail units, cladding, and even substantial changes to the available floor space and use, can be changed much later in the project than those outside the scheme may realise. Even if SD2 only has a possible version of what the 'other-side' of SD2 might look like, I'd still like to see it. |

Paul, I take it you are talking about the Staybridge Suites (formerly Central Hotel) ? Urbano had said that it would start sometime during the first couple of weeks of June so in theory it should be any day soon. There was a theory on another thread that they are waiting for the crane to come down on the Sleeperz development first. I went by on the train last Wednesday and there was no sign of it starting so who knows ! |
