Latest planning apps
Two things for the city centre. 1: A new YHA Youth Hostel, right in the centre of town: described as "Wesley Hall Site, Bridge Street, Cathays". I'm guessing this is pretty close to the corner of Churchill Way / Bridge Street. Provided its of good quality I think this should be good news. 2: 2 shopfronts in the Parc Hotel facing Park Lane and Park Place. I dont know if this means more groundfloor units or just for the bar. |

I think that Wesley Hall site is the piece of land I was talking about a few months ago were some small buildings were being demolished. Hopefully they won't be knocking down the old building behind it that faces onto Churchill Way and looks like an old church. |

I think the new YHA is really exciting. There has been a steady growth in youth hostels in Cardiff recently.. hostelworld.com for example lists 6 youth hostels in Cardiff. A new one called Nomad opened off Newpor Road about a year ago, and was quickly followed by the Riverhouse Backpackers, just down the road from the Nosda hostel. Riverhouse by the way, has a customer rating of 96%, and is on the site as the third highest ranking hostel in the world! Anyway, the YHA in Cardiff is in a pretty ropey position, but it's nice to have it in a quieter location, especially for school groups etc. Hopefully this new Youth hostel will be in addition to the existing one, and not replacing it. http://www.hostelworld.com/ |

I think Nomad no longer exists, but could be wrong. Nos Da is undergoing a massive refurb, with long stay flats at the top and more dormatories downstairs, increasing the capacity greatly. |

A couple of interesting applications today: 1. Demolition of York House and 3 storey extension to Custom House (end of St Mary St). Offices on upper floors and 2 restaurant/A3 units at ground floor level. 2. New 4 storey extension to Jolyons Boutique Hotel on Bute Crescent. 3. New Glass Needle application! 4. New footbridge over the River Ely (near Watkiss Way) including opening section over navigation channel |

It would be very sad if the York gets demolished. Another landmark gone. |

hypercelt I'm with you on that one all the way...why not just convert it, or put a few storeys on it...but don't demolish it |

Perhaps the building is unsuitable? From what I remember it has rather small windows which may make it dark and uninviting as a restaurant of office foya area. |

would indeed be a shame if the York Hotel would go, tho the custom house seems to be fine, and maybe the buildings been left empty for so long it's unstable. i'd imagine it's replacement would be in keeping with the custom houses style. Im feeling very optimistical about the glass needle, this is definately the final submition. all the problems must have been sorted out now, and a spokesperson from the compay said they'll be starting in autumn for sure. it's one the most importent plans (in terms of a single building) in the city, being the first thing visitors will see, so it's imperitive that its perfect. |

Is number 4 Pont Y Werin? If it is then it's good to see another crucial part of the ISV looking more likely. If not then damn. |

An interesting entry in this week's application is by Igloo wanting to vary their planning permission conditions from 3 years to 15 years...is this just saying they won't finish the whole thing for 15 years ? Kind of makes sense I guess considering the size of the scheme. 08/01736/C Variation of conditions DEL Expected Decision Level: BUTETOWN 15/07/2008 Received: Ward: Richard Cole Case Officer: Igloo Regeneration Limited, C/o White Young Green Planning, 21 Park Place, Cardiff Applicant: White Young Green Planning, Paul Vining, 21 Park Place, Cardiff, , CF10 3DQ Agents: Proposal: VARIATION OF CONDITION 1C OF PLANNING PERMISSION 03/99C BY REPLACING THE PHRASE "3 YEARS" WITH "15 YEARS" Land at, Roath Basin, Butetown, Cardiff |

I'm also pleased to see Jolyons expanding and something being done to the York and Custom House. I know knocking the York down isn't great, but I don't see anyone coming forward to refurbish it. It looks like both custom house and the york are set to be one set of offices on the upper floors with two restaurants on the lower floor. The Glass Needle change is as follows for those that are interested and haven't yet read the planning apps : AMENDMENT TO PLANNING CONSENT 07/2111C TO CONSTRUCT A 32 STOREY RESIDENTIAL TOWER AND 21/23 STOREY RESIDENTIAL AND HOTEL BLOCK. ALSO INCLUDED: AN ELEVATED GARDEN, RETAIL, LEISURE AND ANCILLARY/OFFICE AT GROUND, FIRST AND SECOND FLOORS Does this mean that there are now going to be three blocks ? 1 32 storey, 1 21/23 storey and a separate hotel block. Also, were there going to be three storeys of offices, retail and leisure before ? If it does actually start in the autumn I can think of one very happy person on this forum !!! As for the bridge, it has to be pont y werin I guess. |

Looking left on the highest point of the road from the Bay approaching the 'prison' traffic lights you could (well......perhaps...almost!) be forgiven for thinking you were crossing onto the Manhattan waterfront from Newark....just think what an impact three more big towers would make along that stretch of the main line....but we do need something facing them on the south side of the railway.. |

Not quite New York, but I know what you mean Ian. I've always enjoyed that view of the city centre as well. If all the proposed towers did actually go ahead it would look even better. I wonder what will start after the Radisson is complete because it surely doesn't have much work left externally ? I'm looking forward to seeing SD2 mature and take shape and then HOPEFULLY some activity around the Glass Needle or Central Hotel site. |

Fair play the Radisson tower really stands out looking back at the city centre from Roald Dahl Plass. Best new city centre building in years IMO. |

We were always having three towers at the glass needle - or what was advertised as three towers. The last submission had the two lower towers joined by the lift shafts in the middle. They called these 'separate' towers but DCfW disagreed and thought the lift shaft was so large it made it difficult to differentiate the two towers. |

Thanks for the reply Cambo. Now I think about it I can remember three originally. I hope they will be quite different to what we have seen in the last set of images though. |
