FULL-SIZE ART COMMISSIONS - FAQ

A lot of people ask me about full-size commissions. Do I accept them? Would I do one just for them? Do I do requests? So here's a little Q & A for you:

Do you do full-size art commissions?

No. I have tried to do commissions in the past due to people constantly asking me for them. What happens is that I accept commissions, and then my creativity stagnates and I wind up not doing ANY artwork: no commissions, and no personal work. So nobody gets to see anything new from me. It's not fair for me to take a commission that may take forever to do, and make everybody miss out on new artwork.

Why do you stop drawing when you take commissions?

It's simple. Art comes from passion and creative spirit. Art is a personal expression. When you turn art into a job, it loses that spirit, it becomes a chore, and it loses the spark that makes it so beautiful. I'm not the kind of artist that can churn out work without emotion. If I don't feel the art, it doesn't come out onto paper. Worse yet, if I don't feel it, I feel forced to draw, and drawing then becomes anathema. I can't even stand the thought of doing it, even for my own sake.

So how come you take commissions for badges and pendants?

Because they are simpler than a full art piece. Not that they require less work, but they take less creative inspiration. Badges and pendants require less composition and pose work, so they don't kill my muse like full-size work does.

Well, surely it wouldn't hurt if you just took one...

Yes, even just one. Because it's still turning art into a job. Not to mention, if I do a commission for one person, how can I say no to another person who asks? That's not fair of me to discriminate.

Okay. Well in that case, do you do requests?

Sure. BUT... It has to be a request that inspires me. I have to feel the picture. Again, I'm one of those artists that has to have emotion behind it. So, say, if you ask me to draw a feline archer waiting in the woods for her victim, and I like that idea, and my mind runs with it, and it draws out that creative spark, then yes, it just might come to life on paper. Or if I feel like drawing a dancer but I don't know what species, and someone has requested a raccoon, I may draw a raccoon dancer.

So keep in mind, if you request something, it may or may not happen. But requests are good because sometimes I get artists' block just like anyone else, and a request is a good stepping stone for me to get over it sometimes. Feel free to post requests in the Forum here. There's a space specifically reserved for art requests, and I check it from time to time when I need inspiration.

Addendum

Another major reason that I don't accept commissions on a regular basis is life. My life tends to be chaotic, and busy, and a commissions queue makes me feel like I never have a valid chance to rest. There's something that needs to be drawn. Must... work...

However, I WILL be accepting commissions on a one-by-one basis via auction, when I find free time. These auctions will be announced on my home page in the Daily News and in the Updates table (there is an automatic auction listing), on my LiveJournal, and on my FurAffinity and Furry Art Pile pages.
