1s draw with Denbigh
a positive result never looked on the cards as Denbigh and Marchwiel batted out the day on a wicket which never looked like doing the bowlers any favours. Having won the toss, captain Husbands elected to put the home side into bat- looking to take advantage of humid conditions early on. Unfortunately the plan backfired, with the visiting bowlers failing to make the early breakthrough. A succession of dropped catches compounded matters- as Denbigh's Saffer James Hobbs rode his luck, making a very fortunate 100. In truth he was probably put down 6 times- and owes one or two Marchwiel fielders a drink. The home side were able to declare on 262/2- doubling their batting points. Marchwiel set out in persuit of an unlikely win- Mike Forgrave and James Hughes putting on an opening stand of 51- before Mike was bowled. This sparked a mini-collapse as Mario and Salman followed quickly for ducks. However any thoughts of defeat were smothereed as Hughes, Husbands and Tim Newhouse steadied the ship. A couple of late wickets made the score look a little more unflattering- however in truth defeat was never really on the cards- whilst the early collapse meant the win was never on either. The 2s faired better- claiming a 3 wicket win v Denbigh's second string. Denbigh were bowled out for 128- Oddie and Mishra claiming 3 apiece. Dave Jones then made a quick fire 30 as the home side chased the target down Llangollen and Shotton await next week |
