2s lose at shotton
After a night of heavy rain, Captains Daz and Threaders made the brave decision to play regardlessly- with both teams looking to push on for the promotion places. A very exciting game followed, despite the cold and persistent rain, which would have driven many back into the warmth of the pavillion. Shotton mustered 131-5 in their stint- with Threaders making f**k all contribution with the bat- superbly caught by Raja Das. Hemmoo was pick of the bowlers- 14 runs in a miserly 12 over spell. Benno tried his hardest to send the Marchwiel fielders to sleep- his 22 taking up 72 deliveries. In reply the visitors seemed to be in control at various stages- with wickets falling at vital times, ensuring a tense finale. Threaders wasn't good enough to get Daz, the Marchwiell no10 out- despite telling him repeatedly that he was quite possibly the worst bat he had ever seen (a bit unfair considering that Ankers was playing). Eventually Daz(10*) and Rod Pritchard(23*) ensured that M&WCC claimed the 4th bonus point from the penultimate ball of the innings- meaning that despite not winning, they still went home with more points than all those teams who had been rained off. An enjoyable day all round. |

As Daz has quite correctly said, both teams deserve credit for trying to complete this game in horrible weather conditions. It was ******* down throughout and the wicket looked like the goal mouth at Wembley for the F.A Cup Final. Marchwiel won the toss and inserted Shotton on a pitch only ever likely to help the bowlers. This was never going to be a day, like those halycon days when Pink Trombone would sit on the boundary's edge and sip Rioja or Bordeaux or even Merlot, taking in the wonderful sunshine and atmosphere. Marcello Carrino and Benno opened for Shotton, facing opening bowlers Daz (from the Tuckshop End) and Hemmo (from the Kids Playground End). It has to be said that both Daz and Hemmo bowled superb opening spells. Carrino was the first wicket to fall LBW for 1 to Hemmings. Thereafter, it was a game of nip and tuck, Benno refusing to be dislodged by his former M'wiel & Wrexham teammates. He actually fell in the 33rd over for 24 tortuous runs. Thereafter, Nick Rawlinson for Shotton (having consumed 8 cans of Carling) entered the fray and dispatched Bettis for 6 over long on into the kids playground despite Hemmo's floundering attempts for a catch. Rawlinson finished on 35* and Hemmo 12 overs for 14 runs, with 2 wkts. Bettis unluckily wicketless, Mohammed Azuraddin 3-35 off 9. Marchwiel were to chase a target of 136 off a reduced 40 overs. Marchwiel's start began disastorously, Ankers somehow losing his marbles and charging Shotton's South African opening bowler down the wicket and getting caught in the first over for 0. A number of wickets followed as the weather continued to be terrible. Saeed (Anwar) Gulrez hitting a spiretely 27 (many of his shots dissapearing to cow) and Rod Pritchard managed to hit around 20 runs, all to third man off the thick outside edge. However, Marchwiel turned in a good effort in obtaining a 6-4 loss, both teams having gained more points than if the game had been rained off. There was a bit of needle throughout the game, but generally speaking played in a good spirit. Good luck for both teams for the rest of the season. Benno. |

Nice report boys. Good to see that the weather is much as it always is at the start of the season. Sounds like the old Trombone wouldn't have ventured far from the cocktail cabinet !!!! Has Mario scored a run yet, or has he been relegated to bus driver ?? Well done to both sides, hope the Weather Person is kinder in weeks to come. |
