20-20 Extraveganza

In the absence of any competitive fixtures, saturday afternoon saw Marchwiel-Wrexham CC arranged a 20-20 extravaganza, including a bbq and disco.
The spectacle saw a Wrexham XI- skippered by local hero Nick Husbands; take on a Rest-of-the-World XI- captained by Bangor born Darren Bettis.

The Wrexham side featured a number of talented local youngsters such as Big Dave Ward, Anthony Morris, Rhys Ryder and Owen Ward, alongside some not-so-talented stalwarts such as Ankers, PB, Hemmo and Mike Warrington.

Bettis had drawn players from across the globe, in his R-O-W XI, including Saffa Mario, Ozzy Newhouse, Indian Syed Gulrez and fat Cockney Gary Threadgold.

Bettis upon winning the toss elected to bat- sending in big-hitters Mario and Tully. An early mix-up saw the Saffa back in the hutch run-out, by a superb piece of fielding by Wrexham skipper Husbands. Threadgold entered the arena and quickly began to dominate the home-grown attack. Despite scoring at over 6 runs an over, the loss of wickets on a regular basis saw the R-O-W XI in a perilous position. The loss of Threaders for a rapid 25, leaving them on just over 60/6, with under 10 overs to bat. Luckily Tim Newhouse ensured that he reached his 30*, before being forced to retire. The innings closed on 108- would this prove to be enough??!!

The Wrexham innings, saw Michael Forgrave opening with Rhys Ryder. Skipper Bettis(3-0-10-0) and Tommy Bellis(3-1-14-0) opened the bowling tightly, ensuring that the locals were soon behind the run-rate.
Veteran bat Hemmo got the innings moving, with a quick-fire 29- out caught one short of reaching the retirement score. The middle of the innings was however gutted by Saffa pro Swart, who claimed 2 wickets in 1 destructive over- ripping out Husbands' middle stump without scoring. With over 30 runs required and only 18 balls remaining thr R-O-W were feeling confident of a win. However, they had not figured on often under-rated bat Anthony Morris, who proceded to dispatch the death bowlers to all parts. The final over began- 4 runs required for the win- Threaders to bowl the crucial deliveries. Somehow Mozz and the Ward boys were unable to squirm the required runs away- with Mozza caught behind off the final delivery of the day!!!! Victory for the Rest-of-the-World.
Celebrations ensued, and the bbq was set alight.
A great days entertainment.

Re: 20-20 Extraveganza

Great report, pleasure to read. Well done to all.

Sounds like a real fun day and the result was a true reflection of spirit in the Club. Congrats to all concerned. Only one thing better would have been another total drubbing of the Tanyfron mob !!!!

Very pleased to see the youngsters coming to the party. I know Cally would be delighted.

Back to the grindstone next week, so get everyone fired up for a major push for big points.

As always, Correspondent
