Re: Re: Ulster screen build

Hugh,

I have a narrowed late chummy windscreen that either needs the bottom tube extending or replacing so i can make it into an ulster screen. I will need to make an exact replica of the section to allow me to use the original ends.

I measured it all up on sunday and spent a while looking through the Paul Beck catalogue but like you was not too sure about the sections available.

I understand that Willie McKenzie can supply the windscreen top tube section although i have not yet called for a price.

Charles,

Did you machine the H section down to 1/2" high or did you use it as is?

Regards

Rob

Rob

I just used it as is. Contrary to popular though I don't insist on machining everything!

The channel will take 5.5mm glass with one mm spare all round - which to me seemed fine.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Ulster screen build

HAHAHA i do!

I like the idea of the H section but it would need a bit of work to make it fit into the original side pieces. Could fit it on the mill with a bit of a fiddle (the shed isnt wide enough!)

I have been poking around the internet...

http://www.johnkeatleymetals.com/index.html

I have used these folks before for billet brass and ali. The new website lists the correct tube and a 1/2" square channel section the appropriate size to make the screen frame sides but could also be used to make the top tube. I have emailed for a price.

If the channel were to be soldered to the tube there would be a 5/64 gap each side to fill with solder where the flat base sits on the tube. This would not be too bad seeing the instructions from Chris Gould to use silver solder at the ends and soft solder down the length of the joint.

Didn't he used to be a weatherman?

I just ordered the tube from keatleys, delivered by their own vehicle for £22. They do not have the channel in stock at the momment.

Re: Ulster screen build

Charles and Rob - thanks for the helpful suggestions/comments. I've had a look at the Paul Beck offerings but haven't had a chance to look at Rob's favoured site yet. Our local engineers and metal stockist doesn't even carry brass anymore how times have changed...
