There's a very simple solution to the dyspepsia going on here...see, we publish pieces that we deem publishable. Those are our judgments, the judgments of the various editors on staff. Those readers who do not like a particular story or stories, or author or authors, are totally free not to read those stories or authors...at least, I'm unaware that anyone has an e-gun held to his head and is compelled to read something he doesn't want to read.
I won't speak for the rest of the staff on this matter, but I've never rejected a story based on an ad hominem attack from someone inimical to the writer. I reject--and accept--strictly based on my view of the quality of the story. Moreover, whether a particular writer has been published in Omni, or Asimov's, or Houston, We've Got Bubbas is irrelevant. We publish stories [yeh, and poems, etc], not writers, not backgrounds, not biographies.
While we are not perfect, I daresay the pieces we select have a 99.9% adherence to proper English usage. Arguments to the contrary should include direct quotes for credibility; otherwise, they will be dismissed out of hand, as they should be.
On a personal note, in my experience, I've found that critical natterings generally reveal more about the critic than about the object of the criticism.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I have submissions to read... |
