Cesarean section or natural?

Hello,
i'm 29weeks pregnant with identical twins. This is my 2nd pregnancy and my 1st singleton pregnancy was natural. I'm not sure if i should go for vaginal delivery or cesarean for twins. Doctor said depends on the 1st baby's size. But i'm afraid it will be complicated with twins if i go for natural. i'm also concern with vaginal herpes, that might passed to babies during cesarean.
anyone can share your experience?

Thank you
Landy

Re: Cesarean section or natural?

Hi Landy,
Congrats! I hope all goes well. Every birth is unique, but there are also lots of similarities, especially with twins:)

Whether to deliver vaginally or through C-section, depends a whole lot on your situation ie: your babies' positions, estimated weights & gestational age. Also depends if you have complications in the pregnancy like pre-eclampsia, diabetes, active genital herpes, placenta previa or abruption etc.

Being pregnant wt twins doesn't necessarily mean that you will have a caesarean birth. Twins are commonly delivered vaginally. We do have several mothers who hv successfully delivered their twins naturally.

The vaginal delivery of twins depends on the presentation of the babies. Twins can be delivered vaginally when:
* The gestation is greater than 32 weeks
* Twin 1 (the baby closest to the cervix) is larger
* Twin 1 is head down
* Twin 2 is head down, breech or sideways
* Twin 2 is smaller than twin A
* There is no evidence of fetal distress
* There is no Cephalopelvic Disproportion (CPD) that is when a baby's head is too large or mother's pelvis is too small to allow the baby to pass through

It also depends on your gynae. Some wld recommend you opt for a C-sect while others might be more encouraging wt a vaginal birth. Come up wt a birth plan & speak to your gynae abt it.

Personally, I wld recommend a vaginal delivery as the heal wounds much faster if compared to having a C-sect. On the other hand, wt a C-sect, there is more recovery time & there are positives you can take frm it if it happens eg: the babies don't go thru the trauma of the vaginal delivery.

Keep your options open to both. I guess the best thing to do is to prepare to deliver vaginally but understand that you don't have control over any of it & you may end up with a C-sect. Either way you go, just be positive & when you are done no matter which way you deliver, it will turn out for the best!

As for myself, I delivered my twins at 29wks premature & had 1st twin vaginally & my 2nd twin via C-sect. If I had the chance to carry my babies closer to term, I wld no doubt prefered having them vaginally :)

Good luck, I hope you get the delivery you are hoping for!
