Nooooooo, don't The risk is not that small. if you already have 5 children and the special occasion of expecting ntwins is not much a big deal, maybe. And change your gyne!!!!! Sorry got carried away. the amnio does not tell you all you want to know, its invasive and the risks are quite high according to some doctors. I have given this dr s name to so many people on this site, most of them hAD ALREADY KNOWN an had visited him. There's one address that can tell you how your babies are in so much detail, nothing compares to this. Camden medical centre Dr Anandakumar. you are at the right week of pregnancy for the first scan. call him and make an appointment and you will know what I mean. and dont let people poke your precious tummy unnecessarily. And drop me a line later please.

Hi Lyn, As wt Ayda, I wld advise AGAINST it. I'm not against amnio by any means but if there was no problems or complications detected, why go through the procedure? Did your gynae suggest amnio due to your age plus the fact that its a twin pregnancy or did he have other worries? You need to understand that an amnio is done for different reasons: to test for standard genetics, lung maturity & in multiple pregnancy, to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in identical twins. You also need to find out exactly what are your concerns involving the amnio. Is it the results of the test or the risk of miscarriage? If you wld terminate the pregnancy if Downs is a possibility then maybe the best thing wld be to do the amnio. If you are on the fence abt terminating, I wld say NO, it isn't worth the risk of having the amnio & inducing labor. I hope & pray that neither of your babies has Downs. I hope that you are aware that there are OTHER tests that are pretty accurate & non-invasive such as the nuchal fold measurement & the triple screening. Otherwise, in my opinion, an ultrasound wld suffice esp if it shows no signs of anything that wld cause major concern. You shd just let nature take its course then. Shd you decide to hv an amnio done, have it done by someone who does the procedure all the time to administer it. Speak to a perintologist. This is a very personal decision & definitely a tough one. Do what you & your husband feel is best. You will make the best one according to your situation & do whats right for you & your babies! I wld also recommend you seek a 2nd opinion frm the contact that Ayda had listed. All the best & good luck! |

Hi Ayda & Sasha Thanks alot for your precious feedback. Really admire your decision for not going thru amnio during your pregnancies. To me, it is really a difficult decision to make. My gynae recommends amnio mainly due to the fact it is a multiple pregnancy. He mentioned that the triple test would not be accurate for twins (I had triple test done for my 10-mth old girl, same gynae). Sad to say, if any chromosomal abnormality is detected, I would terminate the pregnancy cos I would definitely not be able to manage any Downs. For this reason, amnio seems to be a have-to thing. Then again, I don't want to risk the possibility of a miscarriage. DILEMMA! DILEMMA! Will probably seek out the opinion of the recommended Dr Anandakumar and explore the option of nuchal fold measurement. Thanks alot ladies! |

I am sorry for replying so late to this but am hoping other mummies to be may read it The doctor seems to be misinformed about the relationship between multiple births and the amnio or for that mater CVS too. A mulitple pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage to the power not jsut double so there is a 1 in 200 chance of miscarriage with a singleton pregnancy but a a 1 in fifty chance of losing a baby with a twin pregnancy. The fetal medical centre maintains the database for the triple maternal serum test for multiple births by race and in singapore and provides a list of accreditted sonographers here http://www.fetalmedicine.com/f-competence.htm Sadly many doctors are not entirely familiar with the intracacies of multiple birth and so I suggest talking to members and asking advice On another note it is always worth considering having the abies at a hospital with a level 3 ICU just in case they come early. Good luck and please anyone feel free to contact me on this subject as it is late at night I am writing this Megan |
