Should we revert to formula milk
Hi I have 2 months old twins (boy/girl). We have been feeding them on S26 Gold. 3 weeks back they had bad loose motions and we took them to polyclinic. the doctors advised us to change the formula to Soya based. So we changed to Isomil but there was no effect. Then on advice of a friend, we gave them fresh milk (farmhouse) and it seemed to work. Not only did it work, the kids seem to like it too.. Now should we revert back to Formula milk or continue with fresh milk. What are the advantages/disadvantages of formula milk compared to fresh milk. thanks in advance Sholee |

Hi Sholee, There are 2 issues that bothered me after reading your post. The main issue is you feeding your 2mth old twins fresh cow's milk! Secondly was that you took up your friend's advice without first consulting your doctor. I assume that you are not breastfeeding your babies as there is no mention of it. Breast milk is universally recommended as the preferred source of infant nutrition because of its nutrient & immunologic properties. Why did your doctor advise to change to a soy-based formula? Does your babies have milk protein & lactose intolerance or family history of milk allergy? Unless recommended, soy-based formula: * Shd not be as a substitute for cow's milk-based formulas unless baby has been proven to be allergic to cow's milk-based formulas. * Shd not be routinely used in infants wt a family history of milk allergy in hopes of preventing later allergy. * Shd not be used to prevent or treat 'colic' unless advised. * Shd not be used in preterm or LBW babies. There are some subtle differences among major brands of infant formulas available which may also affect how your babies tolerates one formula over another although they all use human milk as the nutritional standard. Some babies react differently to different formulas. Take mine for example. When my twin sons were discharged, they were supplemented wt Similac Neosure as they were premature. When we changed them to Nan-1, they started having loose stools but were ok after a week. Whereas for my eldest daughter, she was constipated when she was fed S26 & was ok after we changed to Nan-1. Babie who are formula-fed tend to pass motion more regularly, on a daily basis if compared those who are breast-fed. There is also a difference in the stool. Let your babies be the judge, it all comes down to which formula works best/better in your baby's intestines. Therefore, my advice is to try switcing to another formula. Its all trial & error. Get samples frm the milk companies or clinics, else just get a small can to start off wt. Fresh milk or whole cow's milk is not suitable for infants during the first year of life because its low iron concentration & it also increases infants' risk of anaemia during this vulnerable period. They also develop allergies to foods introduced too soon as they have an immature ability to produce the necessary enzymes to break down some foods such as cow's milk. Cow's milk also do not contain AA/DHA. Breastmilk & formula do. I would strongly advise you revert back to formula & only introduce fresh milk after they turn 1yr old. I hope this helps! |

Dear Sholi, I have a son who is allergic to milk (addition to many other intolerences) . He was given a cow's milk based formula hours after delivery for the reason having low blood sugar. The dr said the girl is fione but the boy can't wait for your breast milk supply to come up. That was the start of many problems. There are so many books and wbsites that I can quote for you but this space is so small. So let me share my view based on my experiences. 1) Cow's milk is a no-no for such small children, let alone any child if you ask me. Soon you will find them really colicky and maybe by now they are having that dry skin that will lead to egzama. 2) Sasha and so many other official and unofficial sources are rigt, breast milk (from mummies breast that is!) is best for your babies. Even then you should avoid too much dairy in your own diet. Please dont say that your milk is not enough, even if it is now, there are ways to increaSE IT. Just drink 5 litres of water and feed or express every two hours. Never mind all the disgusting food that is said to improve it. Just water. 3) Did you know that children who develop allergies to cows milk will most likely develop alletrgy to soya based formulas. It is true. Plus, while soya milk is ok for girls, as it contains oestrogen it is not advisable for boys to drink so much as it will increase their feminine hormones. 4) If your babies are hopelessly dependent on formula, try findin the very specialised NEOCATE if possibble. Veeery expensive but at least not harmful. Not available in supermarkets, special agent to be contacted or order directly from UK or USA. 5) Even if your babies do not develop instant intolerences to milk, there may be future problems that will come to hount you for what you gave them as infants. Please listen to these nosy mothers (Sasha and I - she has 4 I have 3, so we know things by experience) and try breast first and lets work from there. You can contact my through the e-mail address above. I can pass you my hp and spill my guts out on how I came to hate cows. (I'm still breastfeeding my 2 year old by the way-) First months are really hard, especially if you are a first time mother but it does get easier unless they develop some disease etc. So just keep your spirits up, ask for help, ask for advice but from different soursec as different people have different information. PS: Cow's milk has less nutrients than formula and babies may get defficiencies if that is their only source. Please don't start solids before they are 5- 6 mnths old. What you are going through sounds very familiar to my problems and don't listen to your mom or mother in law if they say they had given you or your precious husband blah blah blah when they were just 3 mnths old. This is the next century, they can contribute by lots of hugs and dyper changes! (Sory got too emotional and carried away there) Good luck. AYDA |
