sun screen lotion

For most of you this question might look very straightforward. I hate getting tanned so I used to avoid beach places and go to swimming pool in the nights. So never bothered to find out the information earlier :).

I am planning to take my toddlers more frequently to the beaches or swimming pool. Mostly I am planning to take them in the mornings (between 8.30 am - 10 am) or in the evenings (5 pm - 6.30 pm). Last weekend we went around 9 am to swimming pool and though it was not sunny we all got tanned (I didn't use any sunscreen).

1. I read somewhere that I need not go for kids specific one (which are more expensive) and even adults sunscreen (SPF 15 - SPF 30) should be fine. Can some one suggest which sunscreens to use?

2. How often should I apply if I am in the water for an hour or so?

3. I am very worried about toddlers getting tanned. Does these sun screens avoid tanning apart from the main purpose of saving from sunburn, UVA rays damage etc?

4. Any other tips I should follow?

Thanks.

Re: sun screen lotion

Hi Padmaja,

First of all, those are very good timings toget your kids out in the sun as the times in between those two (10am-4pm) is when the sun is at its strongest even on cloudy days (remember, we are quite close to the equator)!

At the moment, I am using Nivea Sun Children's Sun Spray wt SPF 40. Previously, I was using Coppertone Kids. I prefer the Nivea one as it is sprayed on & is less greasy & clumpy if compared to the lotion types.

1) Parents usually make their choice on a sunscreen using a few characteristics:
* the highest SPF they can find, typically 50+
* a kids' brand (Banana Boat Kids, Coppertone Kids etc)

The truth is, they are really not that much different frm those made for adults, so you don't really hv to buy a separate sunscreen for your kids. A sunscreen isn't better just because it is more expensive!

This is what you shd look for when getting a sunscreen:

* provides broad spectrum UVA & UVB protection
* has an SPF of at least 15-30
* is water resistant. even if you aren't swimming, he/she will likely be sweating, so a water resistant might provide better protection than a regular one
* is hypoallergenic & fragrance free, esp if your child has sensitive skin
* is in a form that's easy to use, whether its a gel, lotion, spray etc

2) I wld usually apply abt 15-20mins after & re-apply after 2 hours if we are at the beach & after 1 hr if we are swimming

3) To prevent tanning, make sure you are putting enough on your twins. Therefore apply generously:) Also remember to reapply. However, if you are still worried abt them getting tanned still, then it may help to use physical protection, incl clothing such a hat. And if applied properly, yes these sunscreens do prevent tanning or sunburns!

Hope these can help you!

Thanks Sasha for the reply. I will use your guidelines to buy some sunscreen for our next weekend pool trip.

Re: sun screen lotion

Interesting question...
I had actually read - but that was on an ad from a lab...-that kids'skins are more porous than adults' ones, meaning that they absorb more that ours.

For that reason, they were recommending to use kids lotions rather than adults one, since they were more adapted -who knows what other things we have in the adults lotions... :-(

I must say that, having been burnt many times when doing outdoor sports and developping 'beauty spots' (a nice early warning for skin cancer), I stopped compromising on sun lotions and always buy reputable brands... and we are now using the kids lotion!

Re: sun screen lotion

Thanks cecile for the advice. I am yet to buy the lotion. Been locked at home as kids and myself are going through cold and cough ride.
