twin pregnancy - more ultrasound scan should be taken? Please share your experience.

Hi all,

My pregnancy is about 4 months now.
I wonder if twin pregnancy is needed to have more ultrasound scans? I am a little worry as it seems that I have more ultrasound scans than others. Average I have one ultrasound scan every 3 weeks. My Gynae mentioned that more ultrasound scans is needed for twin pregnancy to make sure everything is ok.

This is my first pregnancy....I am not sure if frequent ultrasound scans is good for babies. Please feel free to input your experience. Thanks a lot!

Hi Yvonne

I delivered my triplets in Dec 05 and although I was expecting 3, I didn't think I had more scans than necessary. On the average, my scans were about once a month, to record their monthly weight gain and to detect any growth abnormalities. This monthly checkup continued all the way till I delivered at 35 weeks, and even then, it didn't become more frequent towards the end (perhaps due to the fact my gynae wanted me to deliver at 38 weeks and not earlier). Possibly the gynae would conduct more scans (or recommend tests) if he suspects any abnormalities but he would explain the situation if that's the case.

I did not stop to think whether frequent scans would be bad for the growing foetus as I think I was more looking forward to seeing their images on the screen than anything else. But in any case, I guess too much of anything is not good, and u should ask your gynae abt it esp since you sound concerned.

In the meantime, try not to worry too much, and pls eat and rest well!

Hi Anita,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I do conceren if frequent ultrasound scans will hurt my babies. I agree with you that too much on anything is not good. I did show my concern about this to my gynae but she mentioned that ultrasound will not hurt babies. Anyway, I insist that average one ultrasound scan for every 3~4 weeks is my limit.

Hi, am 33 weeks now expectingtwins as well. I've had a lot of ultrasounds from the start of my pregnancy. Even as much as every week at one point, during the first trimester. I've done a lot of research and ultrasoujnds do not harm the babies , and i would rather know how they are doing inside my body rather than wonder all the time. their growth patter is always monitored and i think nthis is mopre important than having to worry about ultrasound frequency :) hope this helps soothe your concern...
