How to increase milk ss for feeding twins?
Need advice on how to increase milk ss. My twin boys are now almost 3 months, they stayed in ICU for a month plus. all that time, i expressed and sent the milk to ICU. but once they got back home, i find that my ss has gone down. now that they are feeding on demand, what can i do to increase ss? i would like to breastfeed them totally for at least 4 months or until i return to work in jan 08. any tips also on routines for feeding so that i dun go bonkers trying to fit everyting in. |

Hi Mas, I went from having no milk, to full breast milk for my twins. The trick to increase milk supply is to frequently empty your breasts. Not just feed, but empty it totally every 2-3 hours. So I was on a routine like this: breastfeed twin 1, breastfeed twin 2, then pump out the remaining (if any) every 3 hours. I did that every 3 hours during daytime. Overnight, I pumped at 2am and 5am. That really worked but you need a lot of support. Minimally you need another caregiver to look after your babies while you pump or breastfeed one. If you are committed to providing full breast milk for your babies, it is really possible with diligence and lots of support. After the milk supply is fully established and your kids start solids, you can start to relax on the routine. Hope this helps! |

Thanks Jen. Its really reassuring what you said cos i am doing some of it. I wake up twice in the wee morning (like what you said 2 and 5 am) to bf one and pump at the same time while my hubby bottle feed the other with bm that was pumped earlier in the day. i would express during each day time feed to build up stock for the wee morning feeds. i try to fully bf each of them during the day. The first bottle comes out at about 11 pm when i am just too tired and one of them demands being put on the breast every few mins! Even though its my own breastmilk that is in the bottle, it does make me feel a little sad cos he is not latched on while the other twin gets latched on virtually from 9 pm to 11pm. I have no idea why... Any way, even with this routine, i find that the amount expressed during each feed is only between 40-50ml. sometimes less. soon they will definitely be drinking more than that. so am concerned how to increase ss. do you take any special supplements? |
