Can anyone offer any advice on how to handle Reflux?

Hi,

I am a new mum of triplet boys. 2 of my boys have reflux and it take them a long time to get settled. They strain their little necks and bodies a lot and want to suck all the time. The dummy helps but I don't really want them to be addicted to it. Can anyone offer any advice? I feel quite helpless that I can't help soothe their pain ....

Re: Can anyone offer any advice on how to handle Reflux?

Hi Estee,
My twin boys also had reflux until they were abt 6-7 mths old. Feeding can be a battle wt them or even prior to that. Like you, I had to resort to giving them the dummy as much as I didnt want to. I also propped them on pillows when I fed them. I found these 2 methods helped me a lot.

Here are some pointers:
1. Keep your baby upright for at least 30 minutes after a feed

2. Use a baby sling, which allows you to keep your child upright, while keeping your hands free. Avoid slumping your baby

3. Elevating the head of the cot/bassinet (you may use towels for this)

4. Consider using a dummy

5. Avoid vigorous movements or bouncing your babies

6. The best time to lay your baby on the floor is when their tummys' empty ie: before a feed

7. Place your babies on their tummies as mucha as you can

8. Change nappy before a feed - elevate their head & shoulders. Avoid lifting their legs too high & prop them to the side if possible

9. Avoid any tight clothing arnd their waist eg: tight nappies, elastic waistbands

10. Avoid overfeeding – if he vomits, wait until the next feeding rather than feeding them again

11. If your boys are bottle-fed, it may be worthwhile trying AR (anti-reflux) formula or a hypoallergenic one

12. Offer a spoonful of thickened milk (formula or breastmilk) following the feed

13. If you are breastfeeding, avoid foods that can aggravate reflux eg: citrus, tomato, fatty foods, spicy foods, chocolate & carbonated drinks

14. Avoid exposure to tobacco smoke

Just know that you are not alone in this. The problem wt reflux is that it is so common it is almost seen as normal(even trivial) & most people just dont understand how difficult life can be or understand the impact reflux can have on their lives! The truth is, only families who have experienced it for themselves really understand. Good news is the human body is amazing - even as you are considering options for treating reflux, your babies are already busy doing the real work. Silently, the muscles mature and coordinate. And the great majority of babies with reflux cure themselves - mostly btw 12-18mths.

Try the pointers & pls keep me updated & let me know how its going.

Re: Can anyone offer any advice on how to handle Reflux?

hi - I had a reflux baby too. I ended up at the pediatrician and he was switched to a special thickened formula (of course this is more expensive than the normal formula!) Also, it was not available in all countries, so a real pain if we had to travel to Europe! But it did seem to help. Sasha has given some really good pointers in the PP.

Hope it gets better soon.

Re: Can anyone offer any advice on how to handle Reflux?

Thanks heaps for the useful pointers Sasha. Their reflux seems to be getting a bit better. I've put phonebooks underneath their cot to keep them elevated, switched to a thicker milk and also keeping them propped up more after feeds. Trying to also put them on their tummies more.
One of the boys though don't seem to like the thicker milk. He doesn't finish his bottles anymore and takes a long time to feed.
Thanks again for the advice. Its nice to hear from another parent who's been through reflux and understood my anxiety. Initially I certainly felt like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill!

cheers,
Estee
