Gravity
Um, i don't mean to offend anybody in here, i reckon what you guys are doing might result in chris martin either fleeing the world all together or nodding his head and going "yes yes, this is what we wanted, a congregation of believers." either way, loving the site.. What do u guys reckon is the message behind Gravity? How is it that Chris wrote gravity for embrace and decided to release it as a coldplay track anyway? hmm, just a coupla questions.. LOVES! |

Gravity is a song about realisation and acceptance. It is Chris Martin realising his mission, and as such should come IMMEDIATELY after "Speed of Sound". I'll get to a full breakdown soon - maybe for the site. Anyone else got any ideas? And they released there own version because Embrase suck the big one. ~H

I think that "Gravity" is the realisation of the vision of "Speed of Sound". Chris has had the vision that announced his status as Messiah, and here he begins to realise what that means... It's been a long time coming And I can't stop now Such a long time running And I can't stop now Then a direct reference to the vision of "Speed of Sound" - Do you hear my heart beating? Can you hear that sound? 'Cause i can't help thinking I don't look down Down, that is, from the dizzying ecclesiastical heights he now occupies. Next, he describes how he suddenly percieves the very rules of the universe, and how they affect the ordinary people - And then I looked up at the sun And I could see Oh, the way that gravity turns for you and me And then i looked up at the sky And saw the sun And the way that gravity turns on everyone He seems almost to straddle earth and heavens here. Gravity turns on everyone means the act that we all have our destinies, our god-given role to play in the universe. (Again, as in "speed of Sound", it shows a complete lack of understanding of actual science.) Finally, he reminds us of the universality of his message - On everyone Hope this helps.

I don't quite get all of that out of this song. The idea is that of all of us, including Chris, have to deal with the simple, unalterable (for the time being) state of gravity (the time/space continuom we all occupy), and simply means we are all equal! The turd drops to the earth and we must all wipe our a-- (ideally!). |

If he just means that gravity effects us all, why does he say that gravity "turns"? It doesn't. It makes things fall. It's a "metaphor". |

Yeah, I'd even say it could be a metaphor for karma or the wheel of karma (Buddhist notion), which is related to fate and suffering ("can't stop crying"). gravity - grave - heaviness - earthly prison vs sun - sky - smiling - looking up. Of course the sun has also its own pull - it's the bigger ball after all. |
