I wonder if anyone can identify the rods in the attached photo? They are connected to a 1 5/16" Phoenix crank shaft. I am replacing the block and pistons and thought I should replace the shell bearings, which although not particularly worn are lightly marked after about 18,000 miles. I have bought a set of standard Austin 3 bearing b/e shells, which fit the rods, however I am now concerned about whether I have compatible components. I have ordered some Plasti gauge to be able to measure the bearing clearance, does anyone have recommendation for a maximum please?

PS You may notice the wrinkly ring compressor on the right in the photo. This is a standard item from Demon Tweeks (other compressors may be available) less 10% with 750 membership, which I had to shorten to fit A7 pistons, but it works really well I find and at less than £15 exc. val. for the money.

Hi,
When fitting Bearings you need to clean the B/E on the Rod and remove any Preservative from the Shells then lightly blue the rods and fit shells fit the cap and Torque to the required Ft lbs.
Then release one side and check with a Feeler gauge to make sure that you have crush on the shells, then remove the shells and check the blueing on the back this should be even all over no area missing as this will cause uneven heat distribution and bearing failure .
.003 would be Max in my opinion

If it is of interest I found the cheapest place to buy the Renault 4 shells, as used by Phoenix, is Rexbo in Germany (www.rexbo.eu). Particularly if you can share carriage with some other purchase/friend. This was before the Brexit sterling crash but as they are made outside the UK anyway, shouldn't make a difference. For example last lot of Glyco Renault Rodeo 6 (ACL_) 0.8 Part Number: 01-4133/4 0.25mm I bought cost € 19.19/set. Just saw currently STD & +0.25mm €22.49 (36% discount),+0.50mm €16,49 (53% discount)!!

Martin, you are right on price for Renault shells, but Jack has 1 5/16 crank so I think he can only get the shells from the normal suppliers such as Seven Workshop.
