if
it's about Cardiff..
Sport, Entertainment, Transportation, Business,
Development Projects, Leisure, Eating, Drinking,
Nightlife, Shopping, Train Spotting! etc.. then we want it here!
What would be great for the Bay is a 'Zipworld' type ride from, maybe Sports Village across to Marina or Barrage The one in Snowdon looks epic and would be a great addition there. There is a similar one in Eden Project but I think the Snowdon one is the chocolate.
Seems like they have started work on the apartments on Bute street next to the bay station. Also noticed Admiral are illuminating the top of the building now.
According to Business Traveller website a new Holiday Inn is due to open in the next few weeks at Junction 32 of the M4 - presumably on the old Legacy International site - http://www.businesstraveller.com/news/100675/four-uk-holiday-inns-announced
In other news old Fosse unit beneath St David's Hall is now a dodgy looking carvery restaurant and the old Promised Land bar in Windsor Terrace is now another real ale style pub (whose name escapes me) apparently owned by the same company as The Rummer Tavern.
Plans have been submitted for a 6 storey office block somewhere between the AA and Lloyds buildings on the south west corner of Callaghan Square. Not sure exactly where and the Council website seems to be down ATM so can't access the planning docs.

The team behind the project proposes to make room by demolishing two existing offices, which it claims are not fit for purpose and underutilise a prime city centre location

seriously, I think this is the building next to trade street cafe

I think it might be a different plot that fronts Curran Road, two old buildings in old stone and red brick. I think it is currently Itec, who provide apprenticeships, and their car parking.
I was looking at this the other day and was thinking about where the stairs/lifts are as clearly the building is only as wide as the front room. Since this building is fairly long you can only assume that the stairwell is in the centre with flats either side of it (front and back). That makes them tiny, no more than a crash pad really.
Anyone know what is happening to the unit that until recently housed Graham Griffiths Estate Agents at the top of Cowbridge Road East, near Victoria Park.
The estate agents moved out last month and it appears they are changing it into something else.
I have just bought a house around the corner so am interested to find out what is going there.
It may not be all that exciting but it's good that any extension to the retail park is having a path to the new homes.
I drive past that area in the mornings on my way to work, I know it's only a housing development but I'm looking forward St. Edeyrn rising out of those fields and the city getting a sizable number of new homes. There seems to be quite a bit going on at the moment with a few of the bigger schemes waking up again (St.Edeyrn, Ely Mill and Dumballs Road).
Talking of big housing developments in this part of the city, any news on any of the others such as the 4,000 or at the scheme by Redrow between Lisvane and Pontprennau ? I did see a planning application as I drove down the lanes (St.Mellons Road) between both areas this morning. I'm not sure if it's related to this though.
I actually work in the Business Park and live near The Mill so I'm keen to see them both get going soon (though I'm sure I'll change my mind when the inevitable traffic problems arise!). The amount of talk and planning applications I've seen recently regarding the access road into St Edeyrn's makes me think this is most likely the next "big" development we are likely to see.
I think the planning applications you've seen around Lisvane are probably linked to some of the smaller housing developments (about 3 of about 50 or so houses dotted around the perimeter of the larger development). I doubt we'll see any movement on the larger Lisvane scheme for a while because I'm sure I saw somewhere that the sale of the land is being investigated...

This is in the news today related to the St.Edeyrn development
Seems like there is some fannying around going on :
"Coun Rees, ward councillor for Pontprennau and Old St Mellons, claims Welsh Government officials told her it has not yet received the required paperwork from Cardiff council as part of the call in process three months after the planning committee’s decision. But she said Cardiff council officers told her this paperwork had been sent."
You never know, they might get a house built by 2020 !
The speed at which things move in Wales really is glacial (the rest of the UK isn't much better, mind).
Take for instance the "Circuit of Wales". The latest news is pretty worrying and I'm left feeling that the developers have been quite dishonest in their dealings with the local, Welsh and UK governments: implying the development could be undertaken for minimal public outlay, and after receiving approval and political support, then saying "oh we need £50 million by the way". I'm much less inclined to support the development now - it doesn't seem to be very commercially viable and has no firm commitments from the industry. But, another piece of news is that it might take up to a year to sort out issues around redesignating a replacement piece of land as "common land". Thats right, a bit of unsightly heather and scrub next to an industrial estate thats used by virtually noone was "common land" and therefore a whole lot of paperwork needs shuffling to designate some other nearby land as "common land".
When I watched Week In Week Out yesterday, any good faith I had to the Circuit of Wales had vanished. We should quit giving handouts to this white elephant and cut our losses. I always thought it was being built in the wrong place and for it to have a chance of being remotely successful it would have to be on the M4 corridor and ideally within 30 minutes of Cardiff.
There is an application for that patch of Wasteland next to the Cardiff City Stadium (by the Sand Martin), remember it was earmarked to be a hotel with ground floor units, potentially a restaurant etc.

I'd have rathered the hotel/ground floor units option as well - if I recall the design was 5/6 storeys which would have created a decent bulk along that side of the road, whereas a superstore will be very low-rise.
Having said that, I think Lidl will do well there.
There's another supermarket no far down the road isn't there? Is it Asda. Never really sure about the idea of flats there. Football or any large crowd event can be a nuisance for residents. As for a hotel, again the stadium might have been a draw but it's pretty out of the way isn't it?

Yeah, there's an Asda just down from there, plus a Costco (which I think you need to be a member to join).
I wouldn't say the site is anymore out of the way, hotel-wise, than the hotel in Ocean Way, or off Eastern Avenue, for example. Hotels like premier inn or travelodge (I've a feeling the latter had been lined up for this) are often sited in fairly non-central locations these days.
Close to the dual carriageway, very close to the stadium, on the right side of town to get to the airport (laughs and rolls eyes) - I think it would be a very good site for a budget hotel.
"Having acquired a yet to be developed five acre parcel of land at the Callaghan Square office scheme from MEPC, the Welsh Government is expected to see construction start on a new 100,000 sq ft office scheme by the end of the year – with completion in late 2015 or early 2016. This will cost in the region of £15m."
They are knocking down the terraced houses on Dumballs road opposite the station, is this a prelude to construction starting at Callaghan Square?
really. thats a shame. they were perfectly good houses and could have easily been converted into open plan offices
On a separate note - they are just about finishing installing about 40 chunky metal bollards as security measures outside the red brick National Assembly building on Bute Place - presumably to make it more difficult for Jantra to launch the inevitable pitchfork attack cometh the revolt

The new factory building in the docks is now nearly completed. I understand it will be used for manufacture of steel products which is a welcome sign. I don't know who the manufacturer is. Judging from the size of the crane in front of the shed it could be fairly large or heavy things.
Anyone know what they are building on the land immediately adjacent to the red bridge down on Roath dock - the other side from the Norwegian Church. Doesn't look like anything big but just wondering.

They are planting trees in lines so I guess it must be a car park. sorry it's such a rotten photo.
Saw a drilling rig today on Callaghan Square working behind the remains of the terrace on Tresillian terrace/Dumballs Road. Haven't seen a planning app but with the demolition of the old houses and now this somethingmaybe going up soon. Anyone got any news.
Suppose it might just be an extension of the homeless shelter - what any good CBD should have.
Folks, I'm not at all convinced that they are knocking down all of the terraced houses on the corner of Callaghan Square.
It looks to me as if it's just the boarded up ones (about half the row) which are being demolished, but (and I may well be wrong...) the ones with curtains up and fresh bin bags outside are probably inhabited and very likely to remain.
Jantra - that open plan office conversion vision of yours is still a possibility....
I have no idea but its long overdue! Whatever replaces it should have some ground floor activity. I really like City Road, there are some decent restaurants. Ideally I'd like to see something happen with the old cinema.
Isn't it the old petrol station? Dunno when Tesco will finally get the message that people are pretty ambivalent about them to put it kindly.
Yes they'll have some trade but I'm sure that a lot of their convenience stores don't make a lot of money. They're just after market share and bugger the profitabilty.
Simon, its exactly the opposite. Convenience is the fastest growing and one of the most profitable parts of the sector. This reflects the growth of inner urban populations and the decline in car ownership amongst this part of the population (recent years have seen both 0 and 2+ car households grow in number at the expense of 1-car households). And difficulties in finding sites for supermarkets in urban areas. The prices are generally pretty similar to the main Tesco stores, but they tend to stock different items - less 'Everyday value', more finest, convenience and other high-margin items.
Its not really a dash for market share.. its a dash for one of the few profitable directions for organic growth.
In answer to Simon - yes it is the old petrol station. It's at the library end of Cathays Terrace. I think there are two floors of flats above as well.
