I remember at captain's cocktails a lot of us used to assume posh names to impress the passengers, we had Rupert, Tarquin, Sebastian, etc. Some of the waps joined in too, Tabatha, Jemima, Hortence, etc. Anyone else get up to this? and what names did you go by?
I already had a posh name: Gregory :)
On UK cruises as very few "Southern Punters" had any idea where Barrow was, I used to say I lived in the "Lake District".
Aussie cruising it was just "near Manchester" as your average Aussie has no idea of English geography or any thing else really.
"Rock" or "Rocky" was quite popular with the junior leckies I seem to remember!!
Well done Malcolm for remembering this particular prank of ours, I had almost forgotten about it!
On my second cruise on Himalaya at captains cocktails I had a titled Lady. Asking where I hailed from “Barrow” or phonetically Barra was my response. To which she said “young man, if you want to get on you really must work at loosing that northern accent. These Australians will never understand you”
I can’t say that I ever used a name other than my own at Captain’s cocktails but I remember when I joined SS Arcadia in August 1969 we had a 3rd engineer whose opening gambit was “ my name is ———— perhaps you’ve heard of me or seen my face In the brochure?” He had apparently been in shot when the Company were taking photographs for the P & O brochure. Funnily enough it seemed to have the desired effect in the wheeling in department.
Does anyone else out there remember who this was?
There were a lot of "Bruces" Ozzy cruising (and of course Sheilas.
