Re: A request for helping out with a "taxi ride" in an austin seven

I picked Brian up from his grand daughters house this morning at 11.00 and his face was a picture, being unaware of the arranged lift. The venue was The Woburn Hotel in Woburn and I used a route through the villages to the west and south west of Bletchley to get there, about 25 miles.

Brian's first car in the 1942 was an Austin 7, which he used as a delivery vehicle for his rounds as a butchers lad. When he moved on to a general grocery of his own he bought a chrome rad van, which later was replaced with a locally modified Bentley with a van body.

He told stories of driving to Blackpool in the 1950's with his wife and two daughters and having spokes break in a back wheel. Stopping at a garage, the mechanic told them to have tea at the Cafe next door and in 30 minutes came to say all fixed. The mechanic had visited the local scrap yard and bought a replacement, complete with better tyre and charged £2 for the repair.

At 90 Brian still drives and remembers his A7's with affection, but is glad of modern car comforts these days. Good thing the day was warm and sunny!

To round of the day I went to Bicester to see the overflight of the Vulcan and missed it, it arrived 15 minutes early and I did not have time to get there earlier *rs*!

I asked if he wanted to book me for his 100'th?

Well done, Jack. That was very good of you, to do that.

We all love driving our A7s, but it's amazing how much pleasure they can give to others - through all age groups.

That was a wonderful thing to do Jack, I was half way up a 60 foot tree at my place and still managed to miss the Vulcan!

Location: Near Bicester.
