Brake Cross-Shaft Bearing

I'm building up a Mark 1 Ruby Chassis and have found that the nearside cross-shaft bearing housing does not contain the bearing. Among my pile of bits I have found what I think is the remains of the bearing so it looks like it has broken and dropped out.

Before I go off in the wrong direction I wonder if someone could please confirm the best course of action.

I imagine the bearing is secured within the two halves of the housing in the same way the centre cross-shaft bearing is so I think that what I need to do is remove the bearing housing from the chassis, split the housing and (assuming I can find a replacement bearing) secure it between the two halves of the housing and re-attach it to the chassis?

Re: Brake Cross-Shaft Bearing

Hi Paul. I think you are on the right lines. Part of the bearing is spherical to take out alignment tolerance and slight chassis flex, and this is sandwiched between the two halves of the bearing housing. To take out the rivets you need to drill some of the "meat" out of their heads to weaken them, then take off the rest with a sharpened cold chisel. Not the most pleasant of jobs when you are lying underneath, so safety goggles are a must. On reassembly use appropriate sized HT bolts and locking nuts, from memory these are 1/4 inch to the chassis and 3/16 inch between halves.

Hi Paul

The Search facility will reveal more than you ever need to know about cross shafts and bearings.
