Phoenix Crank

Afternoon all.
Has anyone got a 1 5/15 splash fed Phoenix crank surplus to current requirements? I've got one on order but I'm trying to move things along quickly so as not to miss too much of the season.
Yours, hopefully,

Re: Phoenix Crank

Might be worth giving Vince Leek a call. He had one a while back but not sure if he still has.

Re: Phoenix Crank

Thanks David, but Vince has already sold it.

Re: Phoenix Crank

Tony Betts (www.7ca.co.uk) has been advertising them.
David Cochrane (www.a7c.co.uk) usually holds stock.

Re: Phoenix Crank

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the phone call.

I had a main engine builder asking for a number of cranks for engine builds last month. And he had chased most places looking for them.

So you may find there is a shortage until the next batch comes in.

maybe a forum member will have a spare.

Tony.

Re: Phoenix Crank

Yep, I followed up all the usual sources including Phoenix themselves. The answer was 'no' in all instances. No new Phoenix cranks will be available probably until the end of May. Very sad!

Re: Phoenix Crank

Have you thought about using one of John Barlow's cranks?

Re: Phoenix Crank

Hi Martin,
Yes I did, but still really wanted a Phoenix and so continued looking for one. Delighted to say I was in the end successful.
How do Barlow cranks compare with Phoenix? Do you know who makes them and are there sufficient of them in circulation for an objective comparison to be made?

Re: Phoenix Crank

I've fitted several of both types recently. To be honest it's hard to tell the difference, but the guy who does my balancing reckons the Barlow ones are better.

Re: Phoenix Crank

The forgings for the Phoenix cranks and the JB cranks are identical and made by the same people. It's the finishing that is done separately. I have two Phoenix cranks and two JB cranks and they all perform equally as well. Nothing to choose between them in my experience. I understand that one of the best known A7 competition engine building firms in the UK use JB cranks as a preference.

Re: Phoenix Crank

I have a couple of the JB cranks and endorse what Steve and Alan have said above. It is important that both types are balanced and in my case with the JB crank quite a bit of metal was removed from the sides of the two centre throws. I understand that with the Phoenix cranks it is sometimes necessary to remove even more metal as part of the balancing process.
