Re: Car tax ?

Cliff. Is your name on the V5 and have you had a reminder to re tax your car ( You should get one if you have previously renewed the Vel on your car. You should get a reminder a few weeks before the previous one expires.)0 the only thing that has changed is that you know longer get a disc for the windscreen. You still need insurance however.

Re: Car tax ?

Cliff

There is no longer a requirement to renew SORN so that may explain why no tax renewal notice has been sent out. If your car is on a SORN, then you will need to un-SORN it.

If you are spotted on a police number plate recognition camera then it will show up as no tax and you are liable to be fined.

You can check online at https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

Re: Car tax ?

Hello Peter ,am pretty sure it's not on a sorn as the guy I bought it of would have said.
Thanks

Re: Car tax ?

Basically, it costs nothing to tax it but you still need to go through the motions. If you're putting it on the road, go to www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax and hopefully you should be able to sort it out there and then, using information from the V5c.

Re: Car tax ?

When a vehicle changes hands now the tax is cancelled and the new owner has to apply to tax it.

Quote from the DVLA tax check page:-

"If you have just purchased this vehicle, you must tax it even if it shows as taxed above. Vehicle tax cannot be transferred from keeper to keeper."

Re: Car tax ?

Hi dave, yes I understand the tax situation with newer cars, but my question is about historic where no tax is needed,so how and why do you tax it.so if you are pulled over by the police, they would know as a historic vehicle it doesent need to be taxed,I put its reg into dvla page, and all the car details came up and in the tax box it just said not taxed,so that's ok then because I don't need it to be,right or wrong ?

Re: Car tax ?

No, you absolutely MUST tax your car.

Online process takes less than 10 mins and is the same as for moderns except that no payment is required.

Peter

Re: Car tax ?

Ok Peter , got no problem doing it,just wasn't sure whether it already was,I need a box that just says historic to tick and it would be done,I guess that's to easy for dvla !,

Re: Car tax ?

Worth doing, no point getting fined for something that costs nowt...also methinks your insurance wouldn't pay out in the event of a claim if your car is on the road untaxed.

Re: Car tax ?

Let us know how it goes Cliff.

Re: Car tax ?

I think the problem is that people think because you don't pay for it you don't have to tax it. WRONG. A better description would be (and this what I should have said before) You have to tax it but there is no charge if it is classed as historic.

Re: Car tax ?

Hi all,so got all the car details up from dvla and in the box it says, not taxed for on the road use,so as its historic what should it say in the box beings we don't officially pay any,I'm going to ring them Monday anyway now so I can find out, I am intelligent honestly but I can't seem to find out if it is or if it ain't ?
Cheers for now

Re: Car tax ?

Cliff,

The fact that it states in a green box 'Not taxed for on road use' would suggest to me that prior to your purchase, the car hadn't been taxed or on the road since the introduction of SORN - which was on 31st January 1998. Had the car been taxed on or since 31.01.1998, then it could only have existed in one of two states, either taxed or SORN'd when you bought it. Had it been taxed when you bought it and you failed to re-tax it - which you admit to having not done, then it would have shown in a red box 'Not Taxed'. Similarly if it were SORN'd it would say SORN'd. If in neither of these two states then it would be described as 'Not taxed for on road use' - which effectively means it's sitting on / in private land or garage and not parked or being used on the public highway.

As has been said above, the car MUST be taxed as with a modern car every year, it's just that you don't pay anything. However to get the free tax, I believe the V5c must state the vehicle class as 'Historic' - does your V5c state this? if not you will probably have to have the V5c changed, otherwise you'll have to pay full tax on the car.

I have a 1936 Morris which hasn't been taxed or on the road since 1979 - it's on the DVLA database just like yours as - in a green box 'Not taxed for on road use'

Re: Car tax ?

Cliff,

When I do an enquiry on the DVLA site for my A7 it says "Taxed - Tax due 1 February 2017"

What is the taxation class shown on your V5?

Re: Car tax ?

Dave,it says not licensed in taxation class, the car is a rn box saloon as stated in body type

Re: Car tax ?

Don't phone DVLA.

In the last year I have taxed 2 unlicensed Austin 7's. One was very easy, just went to the Post Office, the other for some reason was slightly more complicated (but not by very much).

Download and complete V112, https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/333128/V112_150514.pdf

Go to your local Post Office with the V5C and the V112 and you may be lucky and find they can change the class to Historic Vehicle online.

If they manage it ask for it to be taxed. They will keep the V5C and you should get a new one in the post duly noted as Historic Vehicle.

If they can't manage it they should give you an application form V62, https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/471730/V62_030815.pdf

Complete the form, noting that you want the class changed to Historic and send it and the V112 to Swansea. You'll get a new V5C and the car will taxed.

I have never seen an insurance policy that mentioned the car being taxed.

But by law it must be taxed to use on the road - even though the tax is free.

And by law if it is taxed it must be insured even if not used on the road. So if you lay it up in the winter and save the cost of insurance you must sorn it, cancel the tax, then re-tax it before it goes back on the road.

Re: Car tax ?

Even though it seems my car is not taxed ,I have had it insured since last March and have just renewed it again with RH .

Re: Car tax ?

Evening people,so an update, went to main post office with forms downloaded and filled in,told lady of my position, she checked on her computer and said all I have to do is fill in section for change of class,I put in heritage, she checked it,kept relevant side of v5 to send to Swansea and gave me a receipt to say the car is now taxed for a year with no charge and will get a new log book in the post.so hopefully that's it.

Thanks to all

I'm not entirely sure youd get fined. I once managed to forget to tax both the Austin and the modern. 3months later I noticed. Taxed both. BUT only got fined for the modern. Plus the back tax. Got away scott free with the Austin.
