Holiday trunks...

Not the ones you swim in!

I asked Martin Prior to make me a bespoke trunk for our Chummy - I wanted some room for luggage and also some spaces to slot the side screens into - there is no space for them in the car with all five of us.

I am delighted with the trunk he supplied, it works an absolute treat, thank you Martin.

I used the exercise to try out the Leather Cloth as a covering for possible use on the Cup Model body, I think it looks rather good and I will report back if it is waterproof!

Martin supplied the belt brackets and hinges, the belts came from a horse riding friend.

You're too kind, Ruairidh, many thanks!........and you've even personalised the registration with my initials!!!

Re: Holiday trunks...

Martin and Ruairidh,

Beautifully made and finished, well done.

Ruairidh- how is it mounted- I don't remember there being a solid luggage rack in your rebuild?

My Chummy has a very solid rack/bumper bar mount made from angle which was fitted over 50 years ago, but the fold down rack was taken off some twenty years ago.

Tony.

Re: Holiday trunks...

Thanks Tony.

I bought a very nice vintage rack from Tony Betts last year - I think it was made specifically for Sevens. I have a tow bar on the Chummy that is mounted to the floor and right back to the chassis, the rack is mounted to this.

We plan to tour the North of Spain in this car and the travel back up over the Pyranees and through France - it is possibly the last time the girls will all fit in the back of the Chummy together. I have modified my aluminium trailer to make it even lighter, this will hold our camping equipment and luggage. The trunk is for our food each day (no room whatsoever for this inside the car) and has an insulated area for perishables.

I suspect that we will have the hood up to protect the girls from the sun a lot and want to have open sides to keep us cool, hence the need for the side screen storage.

Martin made exactly what I needed and I really like it.

It does look very nice

I hope you time your trip to coincide with a retro GP or similar on your way through France. Bressouire and le Puy-Notre-Dame spring to mind. Bonne route!

We arrived at the campsite without incident and set up our new ultra lightweight teepee! Was very comfy with plenty of room for us all,

My parents stayed in the camper next to us and the helicopter is to be converted into a place to stay in the future apparently!

Packing everything back in this morning took some time but I am happy we have everything we need and that we will get quicker!!

You know the car is loaded and gear changes happen a lot sooner than usual but I am happy that the car copes well, this was shot from the dash cam (date is incorrect), steepest part is 25% and we are in first - good test, next stop the Picos Du Europa

Re: Holiday trunks...

What a great set up.
Hope it all proves to be reliable.
Have a lovely time.

Re: Holiday trunks...

Thank you for your hope Nick - it is mine as well!

The heat may cause us some problems I am thinking - it was 30°c here yesterday so a good indication of it's ability to cope.

In the mid 1980's my father took us over a similar route in his Heavy Twelve Four Clifton - the magneto seized due to the heat (as did the two spares in the tool box on the wing), he eventually jury rigged a coil conversion up using wire, tape and a pair of mole grips, this stayed on the car for a number of years until he found a proper clamp!

I have a Magneto fitted and a (tested) coil conversion under the back seat.

Re: Holiday trunks...

Good Luck R with your great set-up. Whist the flags are a good idea, I hope they and the weight in the trunk don't slow you down too much! And since when was 30 degrees hot? Cheers & Good Luck to all. Bill in Oz

and since when was 30 degrees hot?

I know, I know, I know, but I live in Scotland - I was just showing off (extraordinary - even you will agree I am sure) :)

Re: Holiday trunks...

For the benefit of newcomers to the Forum - Ruairidh and I have known each other since he was four years old and we tend to jest through these pages. Saves on the usual phone calls, apologies if it's boring to other Friends. Cheers, Bill in Oz

Re: Holiday trunks...

Very interesting pictures but it won't let me watch the video, it says it's private 🙁.
When is Dunford senior back at home? There is a script centre wheel hanging on his garage wall that I would like to purchase! 😁

Re: Holiday trunks...

Be warned, Richard - now that it's known that the wheel is in demand, the price has suddenly shot up dramatically!! (Again jesting). Cheers, Bill in Oz
