Re: Box saloon wiring loom

Getting someone else to re-wire with the original style wire wound cable could be pretty expensive. I would go for fitting a Ruby loom. I will send you some pictures of how it can be done.

Thanks Ron.

I don't know what happened to my reply, it disappeared! But ill look forward to seeing the pictures.

Re: Box saloon wiring loom

For the amount of thought involved in unfathoming and adapting a loom why not run in single wires as original (but not armoured). Then completely flexible to add to or alter as desired. For such simple circuitry can all be one suitable colour.

Incidentally, when see the frail wiring in moderns, wonder what sort of use the makers envisaged for the Seven with its armoured wiring.

Cheers Bob.

Food for thought indeed. I forget that the old seven founds it's way all around the world, glad to hear from you from such a distance.

I always assumed that the armoured wiring on old cars was additional protection because it is mostly outside of the body and exposed, unlike more modern motors.

Re: Box saloon wiring loom

Please don't use just one colour for the wiring, it makes fault finding a nightmare. I had the unfortunate experience of unravelling a 1934 Seven with all black wiring after an auto electrician had fitted a new ignition/light switch and mixed two of the wires up. Everything worked except you couldn't switch the engine off.

Re: Box saloon wiring loom

Oh dear, that sounds awful. No I wouldn't do that, or even allow the guy to do it. Iv been told it's something I could do myself, but I don't have the time & I want it done right first time, not have to go back to it to make adjustment.

Re: Box saloon wiring loom

Seven wiring should be dead simple for a specialist but you never know. The 3 brush dynamo may be a puzzle to them. The circuit diagram from the handbook may be useful, with the proviso that original headlamps solenoid dip, and other variants of original likely. Also the Cornforth diagram from the Dorset site may be useful, although the Ruby diagram different in detail. Any known mods ie as associated 12v conversion best provided or at least mentioned. Plain wires can be colour sleeved at the ends if considered necessary.

Hi Dave
A neighbour had a Mini which had been entirely rewired with loose white Trurip and was a definite challenge. At least with the Seven can see and reach both ends of most wires.

Re: Box saloon wiring loom

Hiya Bob.

She has no modifications that I know off, not even indicators.

Prior to my ownership she had been laid up since the late 80's with only a couple of local short runs by the trader I got her from to prove that she worked ok.

I'm surprised how well she goes after just a service, she did have quite a bit of bodywork done before she was properly ready to use, the rear floor was particularly rotten, but she's all sound now & repainted. Next job is to grease her up ready for a 3 day show next weekend.
