steering box

I'm sure this has been covered many times but what oil or grease do you put in the steering box of a 37 Ruby
Many thanks

Re: steering box

Paul,
I use EP 140 as in the rear axle. The steering seems stiffer with grease in the box.

Re: steering box

Is that the same as the D140?

Re: steering box

''Is that the same as the D140?''

unless ''EP'' quoted in error then the answer is no they are not the same.

(especially if you value any phosphor bronze bushes in your diff' or elsewhere - in which case stick to D140.
Some dispute this, but I stand by my recommendation which is supported by various prewar Austin clubs).

Re: steering box

Penrite produce a specialist self-levelling, high viscosity lubricant for veteran / vintage steering boxes. It's a semi-fluid grease. It's quite widely available, links to just two UK sources are below.

Please explain...

Re: steering box

It is widely accepted that EP140 is not good for phosphor bronze bushes as it leaches out some of the other metals such as tin leading to earlier failure.
D140 does not do this.

Re: steering box

Thanks for that.

Re: steering box

If you search "diff oil grade" EP140 was discussed considerably between June 2014 and June 2015. I think the conclusion was that recent formula EP 140 is no longer harmful to bronze bushes or other bronze components inside transmissions (or steering boxes). Unless I have interpreted it all incorrectly!

Re: steering box

EP oild only damage yellow metal with temperature. Cool EP oil in a steering box isnt going to hurt anything

Re: steering box

The OP should be aware that if he puts either D or EP 140 into his steering box the likelihood is that it will migrate to the garage floor. If this is the case 'groil' maybe the easiest solution, a DIY mix of 140 and grease that won't drip of a spoon!

However if he has rebuilt box with excellent seals I apologise.

Re: steering box

There are different types of EP140.

EP140 Hypoid contains additives that's will damage the bushes in A7 back axles.

EP140 Hypress is perfectly safe to use in A7s - I have done so without issue for many years and many miles.

If you are unsure which EP140 you have then use D140 it is readily available and can be cheaper.

Re: steering box

Hi Ruairidh,
that's a useful nugget of info - I don't think many people (including myself) knew there was more than one type of EP140.

Re: steering box

We tried Jeff Taylors suggestion and are very happy with it. It doesn't leak and sticks to the gear like STP. Another plus is that it is designed for steering boxes and not diffs.
