Re: Nippy engine?

I can't see from the photos if it's a Nippy block. Anyone interested has some questions to ask!
Regards,
Stuart
It doesn't look like a Chromidium, looks like an early block to me.

If you're thinking it's a vintage block because of the screw-in core plugs, some Chromidium ones had them too. Tony Betts has some very nice pictures of one for sale on his website.

If you look closely at the AUSTIN SCRIPT on the block and compare it to this one:

The script on Bonhams engine block looks like a bad aluminum replica radiator script stuck to the block!!!!.

Liam,
There is no Austin script on the block.
There is however an Austin script on the crankcase.
The Nippy crankcase is sand cast, the 3 bearing crankcase that you refer to is die-cast. hence the difference in finish and detail.
If it is indeed a Nippy crankcase it will be splash oil feed. (The Speedy is pressure feed.)
How do you know that metric fixings have been used?
Have you had a chance to examine the engine, if so do you know what crank is fitted?

The block appears to be vintage, non sports. Screw in core plugs and off-centre valve chest screws.

Sorry Henry you are right meant crankcase not block

Re: Nippy engine?

The crankcase is wrong!
Wrong block (pre-1930), wrong head etc, etc.

Re: Nippy engine?

Sorry Liam not sure why you object to this engine so much, the crankcase and sump look like they are the genuine article, you do not know what crank, rods and cam are in there and they may be correct. The nose piece appears to be aftermarket so could have some pressure feed arrangement but we can not see in these pictures, I do agree that the top end is not sports parts.

Re: Nippy engine?

And it's doubtful you'll find a Chromidium mark on the block in the photos, as we don't get a look at the off-side. On my Speedy engine it was on the back right-hand corner of the block, enclosed in a diamond casting. A shot or two of the offside would also tell us if it's been a pressure-fed or not. Whatever it is or isn't I believe the price is ridiculous - but I'd buy it if it had the car attached !! Cheers, Bill

Re: Nippy engine?

By chance I spotted a Chromidium block at Beaulieu today.. (marked above and in front of the water branch, of course.)

is that £5.00? I hope you bought it....

£1840 inc premiums

Re: Nippy engine?

I suspect someone's bought themselves an expensive crankcase. But, if it's what you need and you've got the money..............!

Given the price, it seems at least two people did

The question is really: Is a Nippy with a Nippy crankcase worth £2k more than one without. I guess probably it is.

Re: Nippy engine?

Does beg the question of what the feel of the larger dia crankshaft is in comparison to the standard? Is there likely to be any discerneable difference? I heard someone talking about adapting the 'flat side' crankcase to fit the 1 1/2" crank. Is there any point?

Presumably if the going rate for a Nippy crankcase is now £1200 and upwards, it won't be that long before someone starts remanufacturing them.

R,

Further to the postings about the Nippy engine on the Forum, would you please post the enclosed being the engine from my Type 65 as a comparison to the Bonham's photo. Correct, crank, rods, camshaft and head etc., but the block is not a Chromidium one.

Re: Nippy engine?

An as a further comparison here is my 1936 pressurized Nippy engine, rubber mounted sand casting, I think the splash fed engines may have been die castings by this stage. That would make me believe the Bonhams engine was at least correct in this respect.

Re: Nippy engine?

"is that £5.00? I hope you bought it..."

The ticket price was £500 which might have been a starting point for negotiation if the rear block to crankcase mounting flange had not been brazed back on.

Re: Nippy engine?

Hi Dave g,

Good to see you got back home ok, not to much traffic I hope.

You beat me to the punch line on this one, with the repaired mounting hole and price.

I'll take a punt that the £500 pound asking price was copied from the one sold on our web site. www.7ca.co.uk

Although the one I sold was in excellent condition. NOT repaired like this one.

Good to see people useing the web site, if only to copy our prices.

A strange beaulieu this year I must say?

Tony.
