Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

Sorry Charles, I've not had any experience with electronic ignition but I've been think about fitting it to my special. I've been looking at this unit.

Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

Fitted the 12v to my car (its 12v!) and fitted 6v (+ve) to my Uncle's, both Mk I Ruby's, done over a 1000 miles in my car, same set up on my Rover P6, which has done over 60,000 miles in the last 12 years, simple, fit it, forget it.

Suggest that the "collar" that fits over the shaft (this has the magnets in it) is gently chamfered on it leading edge as it is a very tight fit and needs a bit of help for it to slide on, I used silicone as well to help it.

Instructions are overly complicated - they could be simplified, i.e. disconnect low tension lead and connect black lead, blah, blah, instead, they say something like, the low tension lead will now be "terminal 1", the other end, "terminal 2", connect this to that, blah blah, it is only two wires!

Pleased with my ones, a very neat package and does away with points & condensors of dubious quality/origin and of course is always in-tune and if the dizzy is a bit worn, any ignition "scatter" is reduced as none of the rotating parts make any contact.

Good luck.

Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

I am intrigued by the desire to fit electronic ignition. One of the great attractions of the Seven is the simplicity.

My RP was used as everyday transport and stood outside in the southern SI winter. It started from frosts below 10deg F although an old coat was kept over the engine. In Wellington driving into horizontal rain and salt spray never misfired despite plugs with bare tops.

My observation was that wider plug gaps seemed to have the same harshening effect as more spark advance. I could easily detect .005 difference.

For those prudent souls retaining manual advance, a light spring can be added to eliminate backlash in the linkage.

A very small spark will ignite a normal mixture. The modern obsession for giant gaps and ultra high voltage is to fire weak mixtures. With a Seven these will likely erode valve seats. I have a manual for a Pratt &Whitney Double Wasp; plug gaps .012”

Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

Can you post a link the specific one used in your Uncle's car please Gary?

I had a quick scan but nothing jumped out...

Thanks.

Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

Thank you Gary and others for your response -- much appreciated.

I have already fitted electronic on my special but this uses a Lucas distributor and is on 12v. Works very well and without need for advance/ retard. (They are welded together)

To answer Bob, the condenser connection and points on he DKA are fine until something works loose etc so my intention is to go electronic on my standard 6v Opal but keep all the bits. Restoring to original is always an option for a future owner.

The plot thickens -- have ordered the bits to convert my DK4A to electronic from Powerspark Ignition Ltd, Bromsgrove.

Found them very helpful. They are currently manufacturing a DK4A replica with electronic innards which will straight on to the car. Should be available in around three months. Guy to speak to is Mark on 01527 889453

Ruairidh, these seem to be available from several places, I got mine for Uncle's car from HERE

He has his car as positive earth and that kit is suitable for that polarity.

Negative earth is HERE

These are listed on eBay as well as direct from the supplier.

Very discrete fitting, I also fitted a red Distributor Doctor rotor arm to complete matters!

I just typed into Google "dk4a electronic ignition" and loads of stuff turned up

Bob, my decision to fit the type of electronic ignition system I selected (see elsewhere on this thread for the product link) was it simplicity.

I was also mindful of the dubious quality of many replacement ignition parts and doing away with potentially troublesome points & condenser, was another deciding factor.

Of course, the electronic ignition I fitted is fully reversible.

Thank you Gary.

Re: Electronic Ignition for DK4A

I fitted an Accuspark unit (Kit Number 39a LUCAS DKH4A Positive Earth D shape cap)to my 6 volt Pearl, which works superbly.
Overcomes the inherent wobble and hence poor timing of the standard unit. It comes with a newly tooled baseplate for easy fitting.
Only slight issue was to ensure enough headroom between rotor arm and distributor cap carbon.
I've done about 4,000 miles including two trips to Molentocht and a Yorkshire experience. I can't recommend this solution highly enough (and the company is also incredibly helpful).
Have a look at their timing light with electronic advance feature - unbelievable!
