Re: Pinion Wear

Yes Tony I have joined the Melbourne Austin 7 club, I have raided the spares once but a more serious one is to follow.

All up from here though!

It was sold as a runner which was accurate...at the time.

Re: Pinion Wear

As was my Chummy- a number of 'fixings' later it is running well (or am I tempting fate to say that) !

Re: Pinion Wear

I have seen similar pinions but as with most cars the background is unknown. What do the gears worn part through sound like?
I don’t think Austin made gears are prone to wear. My car spent much of its life in an alpine suburb of Wellington; at 110,000 miles slight pitting had started at the heel end probably due non optimum adjustment, but, based on gears in other cars, I would have guessed thousands of more miles before serious.
I wonder at what stage EP might help.

Re: Pinion Wear

If you refer to sulphur phosphorous EP then never- this requires sliding contact as in hypoid CW&P to work - the Austin 7 spiral bevel gears have rolling contact.
