Roofing a 'C' cab van.

Good Morning.
Work is progressing on the 'C' cab but can anyone advise with how the roof should be covered?
Currently it is covered with a single layer of a thin canvas material but what should it be topped out with?
I was told that in the 20's and 30's they were covered with bitumen and sharp sand, much like my shed.
All advice appreciated.

Hi Stuart I have just finished the roof on my c cab.
I used thin ply and screw it to the rafters then two sheets of 3mm foam double sided tap it so it dose'nt move then use Woolies exterior quality leather cloth.
