Re: A clear version of anti-corrosion paint?

I know that you are reluctant to use laquer but I use it with success on components which I have derusted such as the Dynamo , Starer etc, this leaves a weather proof coating without the newly painted look , more authentic. You can buy a semi Matt finish if you are concerned about the glossy look, but just use the Halfords cheap range laquer.
Hope this helps

Re: A clear version of anti-corrosion paint?

Will try both - thanks.

My gut feel is that I dont need the dispersant in 3 in one oil, I can just rub on one of the hardening oils if I go that route.

I agree about the lacquer, but for things like the little toggles that hold together the wires of the steering wheel, there are little inaccessible cavities where the oil might be better at stopping the corrosion restarting, as I can push it up into the seams.

thanks all.

Ok, so that sounds silly. I'm trying to remove aftermarket paint from the fittings on an Ashby steering wheel which I presume used to have chrome. There are remains, but the effect is quite nice although I know the ring and the brackets holding the wires are steel so will be prone to rust.

What would you treat them with to keep them as is, without looking varnishy? I was wondering whether to rub them with Vaseline, but it will just come off...

Ditto, clear laquer I'm not sure will keep rust at bay.

KBS coatings do a clear rust seal. I have use their gloss black and satin black. It is extremely tough and can be hit hard with a hammer without marking, yet will flex without cracking. Can only be removed mechanically - no chemicals will touch it. www.kbs-coatings.com . Only problem is finding someone that sells it as they are trying to get another UK distributer after the one wife/husband operation near me gave up that side of their business.
Holden or Frost may help.
Needs to be applied following their process strictly - but don't see why it would not then last your lifetime!
If you want any more info (eg why better than POR15) and what to look out for when using/preserving paint in pot please do ask me.

Re: A clear version of anti-corrosion paint?

There was some stuff I used once called Kephos that was given to me by someone who got it from a panel beater. You painted or wiped it onto bare steel panels and it would stop them corroding. It was clear so wasn't like a normal paint. It worked brilliantly. What looked like bare steel stayed rust free for years (literally while I was restoring my MG).

The problem is I have never been able to get more of it. And it is complicated by the fact that there are other products with a similar name.

The closest I have found is this stuff possibly: http://www.solvents.net.au/index_htm_files/PAINTGRIP%20253%20(212997).pdf

This is from a forum post here and it certainly sounds like the stuff I used to have:

Never actually found anywhere in NZ that sells it although I haven't tried very hard.
