Ulster rivet sizes/ ulster colour.

Two questions if anyone knows or has advice.

1. What size of rivets were used on original ulster body work??

2. What colours did original ulsters come out in?

Cheers,

Athow.

Re: Ulster rivet sizes/ ulster colour.

Hello,
From a repro Austin Seven Sports poster of 1930 the standard colours are:-
Cream body,green wings,black upholstery,hood and wheels.
Black body, hood and wheels, red wings and upholstery.
Red body, black wings, upholstery, hood and wheels.
Also any reasonable colours to order without extra charge.
Sorry,don't know about rivet size.

Re: Ulster rivet sizes/ ulster colour.

Had a quick word with Chris Gould and he reckons, like I do, that they would've been 1/8" but in certain areas might have been larger if under more stress. As you're building a replica body and presumably most rivets will be out of sight, not sure their size is a critical factor beyond being strong, long enough and fitting the gun you are using. Someone like Ian Williams may have a different view and another source of useful info. would be someone who regularly builds Replica Bodies such as Rod Yates, Roach Manufacturing or Heath and Huckle. A7 Owners Club's 'Red Cross Directory of Parts, Products and Services' is indispensable for such contacts.

Re: Ulster rivet sizes/ ulster colour.

Have rebuilt only two Ulsters that were definitely original Longbridge-bodied. Both were held together with 1/8" steel rivets. The few external rivets along the body sides (where joined to the flange on the floorpan) did seem to have larger heads to the rivets, but maybe flattened out more. No problem here if you're fitting running boards, as hidden by them from memory (not at home to look up Notebooks or photos)> Cheers, Bill

Re: Ulster rivet sizes/ ulster colour.

Hi Athow, definitely get in touch with Ian Williams. Him and Joss are building replica Ulster bodies for the special builders group now and knowing them both they will get them as close to right as possible. Ian can probably tell you not only the exact sizes of the rivets but exactly how many there are too :)

If you ever pop over the water to Wellington come say hi although I haven't got much progress to show you since last time you saw me in Ak!
