Kingpins

Do we know what the original specs for kingpins were? Material, heat treatment, dimensions, tolerances and fit.

Re: Kingpins

Kingpins should be made from fine grain case hardening steel- EN36A or EN39 B. Carburised to .020" depth.
Quenched in oil from 820C.
Then grain refined at 220 c.
Hardness Should be 59-61 Rockwell C
Ground to .500" -000" + .0002".
I prefer to make them from High tensile, heat treated (toughened) Chrome plated bar (hydraulic Shafting). You can drill and tap it OK for lubrication. Shock resistance is far higher than Cased Steel.
Not sure of lengths but a detailed article was printed in the Clubs Assn mag years ago c/w drawings.
Hope this helps
