Any chance of a couple of dimensions? Always helps to know how big/small things are. The curved slots do seem screen-like, a wing nut or knurled knob on the outside?

My thoughts exactly Duncan. Total overall length is 9 3/4". They are definitely not home made. Just found them in a box that came with the last kit of bits I bought.
