I have used nylon string through the loop on the spring, tied round a hefty screw driver to get some leverage - seemed to work. Colin

... the brake arm return springs, I assume these are 'handed' ...
Not only are they handed, they are different front to back. Each of the 4 springs is different from the other three.

A brake shoe spring hook might help
