Re: Radiator

There's still places around that re-core radiators. Perhaps they'll have the experience to do a job like this if you've deep enough pockets.

Re: Radiator

Hi Duncan

I've got two vintage cores which fit the standard chummy rad 23-27 shell. I think in late 28 they changed to an AD/Nippy/Ulster shape before they switched to taller chrome rad. For box saloons etc.
I've also got a brass Nippy/Ulster shell and these cores don't quite fit the aperture, being about 3/4" short.

What rad shell are you using? If it's a chummy shell I might be able to do a swap.

Re: Radiator

Thanks for the offer Bill. I'll have to measure up and see what finished height I need.

If a new core is to be fitted how is it done? I could do with looking at a dead rad and taking it to pieces to find out how they are built. I would imagine that the tubes must be lead-soldered into a holed plate which is then soldered to the base pressing on its equatorial seam?

Re: Radiator

Don't mess about Duncan. Whilst you're skilled at metalwork, your questions show that you've no experience of radiators. Take it to Tony Wilder at Garforth (near Leeds so no real distance for you) who's been working with radiators all his life.

He won't charge you a fortune, he'll be more than helpful, he'll advise you what needs doing to achieve your aims and is a thoroughly decent bloke. You'll maybe be surprised who he does work for including a fair few who post on here.

No web site but phone him on 0113 287 2946.

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks Steve.

Re: Radiator

I second the Tony Wilder recommendation.

Re: Radiator

Not surprisingly, I'll third the recommendation!

Re: Radiator

Tony is the magic person with radiators Duncan.
Don't even think about touching it yourself is my advice.

Re: Radiator

I've just spoken to Tony, seems to be a very helpful chap and the price is not too bad either. Cheaper than me making a mess of it when there's a specialist on the doorstep.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Radiator

Having decided to have a new shorter 14"(?) core fitted I now need to either cut down a tall brass shell or find a shorter one.
I'd offer to do a swap but the shell I have is not in good condition. It's been repaired badly and has been cut on the floor to allow it to be spread wider. There are lots of holes. some of which have been repaired poorly and I suppose I can make something acceptable from it but would prefer to find one in slightly better condition.
Any offers?

I'm also trying to put an ad in the Sales/Wants section but cannot find anything in the code required box.
Am I being dim as usual?

On Safari the capcha code does not appear as it does on Firefox?

Re: Radiator

I went to they Tony Wilder yesterday and he is going to sort my problem. A fascinating true "old school" craftsman and very interesting. A fine collection of work in hand, I could have spent the day there!

Re: Radiator

Duncan, if you need a tall radiator shell to alter I will be able to help!

Re: Radiator

Hi Malcolm , thanks for your kind offer. That would be most helpful as the brass one I have is in very poor condition having been bashed about, split, badly repaired and drilled all over etc.
If you could send me a mail to establish contact I'd be most grateful.
