Re: Chummy headlamps - LEDs?

If you are using the standard "Seven Workshop" replacement reflectors, Peter at CLASSIC DYNAMO & REGULATOR CONVERSIONS (see Cherished Suppliers) can supply suitable headlight and sidelight LEDs to fit - I have done my 29 special . He can probably match the bulbs fitted to any other reflector, too.

Re: Chummy headlamps - LEDs?

Yes, but '29 headlamps have a single filament main beam and a separate side light bulb. A Chummy has a dual filament bulb, incorporating side and headlamp. I know I can get double dipping bulbs that would fit, but what I was wondering was if anyone had come across a side/headlamp dual LED.

Re: Chummy headlamps - LEDs?

I'm no expert here but you may have to go down the sidelamp (5w) and brakelamp (21w) double pole lamp route ie. stop/tail liight bulbs also in the front end. I opted to have dipping headlamp bulbs (not LEDs) in my '28 Chummy as I never park anywhere using side lights anyway, and another Chummy I have travelled in front of at night kept the back of mine warm on 21 watts as above.

Re: Chummy headlamps - LEDs?

Is there a regulation applicable to a 1920's car that says you must have front sidelights? I never use sidelights on my chummy even though it has Lucas R47 lamps fitted with LED headlights (non dipping but set low enough to not dazzle)and 6W sidelight bulbs. I drive it with no lights or headlights, usually the latter so I can be seen. Front sidelights take about same current as LED headlights.

Agreed. I have fitted the Cup Model with double dipping LED lamps. Current consumption is so low that it is possible to run with head lights all the time. I still need to put a wire link in the switch panel so that the headlights are switched on in both positions of the light switch.

Re: Chummy headlamps - LEDs?

As far as I can tell, you are required, by law, to have front position marker lights (sidelights). There does not appear to be a restriction on the intensity of these. I interpret that to mean a double dipping headlamp bulb complies, for pre'31 vehicles. I'd rather have a 6w equivalent side light, but if 36w is all that's available, I'd rather be able to see where I'm going.
