In the article from an old NZ VAR mag Stanley Edge maintained he had not seen a Peugot until years after the Seven. (Originally from Bristol A7 Club, Phil Llewellin)

But had Herbert?

Re: Baby meets Bébé

It is believed that neither Edge nor Austin had seen a model in the flesh but Edge was familiar with it's design. Edge appears to have warmed to the engine specification and believed the future was to design a small, four cylinder, in-line unit as favoured by the Continentals...and this proved correct.

Bears an uncanny resemblance to the early Seven...

Re: Baby meets Bébé

Stanley told me he didn't see a Peugot until many years later (although he had a listing of all the appropriate small cars & their dimensions available at the time), but claimed that Herbert wanted something along the lines of a Rover 8. At the factory they had a large American car (forgotten the name but think it was a Gray) from which Stanley gained some engine knowledge. As for the suspension, he thought that the Boss got his ideas from the Model "T" Ford. So many stories still abound. Cheers, Bill

Re: Baby meets Bébé

Bill is correct in the name Gray. A Gray light truck was used at the Works and I understood that it was its chassis layout that may have influenced the triangular form of the Seven chassis.

Re: Baby meets Bébé

There were certainly plenty of model T to observe. Through most of the 20s more T on the roads of the world than all the rest put together. If he scaled down the T construction might explain the modest proportions of many components (appropriate for the early models)
The question of ball race retention recently arose. The detail of early FN may be of interest if anyone has.

Some may not know that Herbert visited Henry Ford more than a couple of times and they became good friends. Cheers, Bill
