Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

I always grease mine Micheal (every 10,000 miles) with graphite grease.

Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

Thanks, will do.

Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

Having found that the cable in mine was broken, I removed the broken bits.

The "lubrication" was almost solid, it wouldn't come off unlessI scraped it.

I guess the friction contributed to the break.

So the new cable has sewing machine oil, rather than grease.

The old cable had plated brass end connectors, so maybe was original, which would account for the condition of the grease, but I will stay with light oil for the time being.

Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

Yes, mine is broken too, hence the question. It looks as if it has been nicely lubricated with groil I suspect.

The break was a couple of inches behind the speedometer where the cable starts to bend down as it runs towards the bulkhead. The most torturous bend in its route to the gearbox. (Box saloon)

I had pondered drilling another hole in the bulkhead just a couple of inches above the original but surely this shouldn't be necessary???

Re: Speedometer cable lubrication

Mine broke at the gearbox end - the sharpest bend.

When shopping for a new cable (for the Magmo speedo) I found there was a choice of lengths, 48" or 51" I think.

The original was the shorter length, I bought the longer one and the cable bends are "lazier" and kinder to the inner.
