Re: It's not just Rubys ...

I'm speechless, there are clearly more idiots around than I thought.

Re: It's not just Rubys ...

It's a pity that this keeps happening but… many of the standard form saloons which are perfectly useable and interesting are regarded as the grey porridge of the motor collector's world. A sports or special is seen as a much better investment than savings as the bank rate is so low. People with money are using cars as a means of replacing the interest they might expect from a savings account and they don't really care for anything but a return.

My drive-it day took me to a classic car show where most of the Austins except two were Allegros from the 1980s.
There were a dozen or so interesting cars, some nice oily rags, some over-restored magpie attractors, a lot of overpriced auto jumble and very little else of any interest to pre-war car owners

Re: It's not just Rubys ...

The Riley world is rife with this and is a cause of real concern. Kestrel saloons being chopped up to turn out '2 seater sports' models at hugely inflated prices. Sadly, the unknowing purchasers of these offerings, thinking they've just bought a Sprite or whatever, and the profits available to the unscrupulous, will continue to drive this market...

There seems little can be done to stop it..

So maybe the continental idea about making people responsible custodians of their motoring heritage is not so silly after all?
