Steering gear wheel

I am trying to remove the steering worm wheel (BM 32 in the '33 parts list) and (of course) have damaged the thread on the steering lever - the thread that takes the nut that holds the gear on to that **** taper.

What was this thread before I got at it, please?

In case you have not found the answer --it is 1/2 inch BSF
