Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Youll probably be OK as long as you don't have to navigate any corners.

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Ian surely in a Seven even a straight would be fun trying to read a screen???

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Interesting and notwithstanding the fact that you simply want to display the sat-nav function, I'm somewhat amused with an advert that says:

"car steering wheel holder, hold your device on the steering wheel . . . good for watching movies"

Well that's definitely not legal and must rate as some of the more stupid marketing copy yet! Personally, I still like Murray's, "A Mars a day helps your rest and play"

Good luck finding something that'll serve you well Jon,

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

thanks all. Yes, I agree, it looks potential dangerous, but it also looks in the line of vision, which many satnav arent.
If I still had the 65 special with no central functions in the steering centre, I'd have adopted Russell's route.

I'm not intending using it, but for 99p posted, I've bought one to see other possible mounting opions. I find windscreen suckers lose grip and it might be that a bit of horizontal copper pipe in the recess of the Nippy cubbyhole in front of the driver might give the darkness so one can actually see the screen - (as well as being useful if I find any bats.)

I'll report back...

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Not a cheap option but have you looked at using a head-up display?

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

that would come into the category of 'another uneccessary life complication' for me. Another thing to buy, lose, get stolen, break... I also wonder if you could see that in an open top car?

But that's just me... :-)

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Cannot think of a more dangerous position for a Satnav!
Unlike looking at dash mounted ones where you have some idea of what's happening ahead by flicking eyes back and forth, 'wheel mounted means taking your eyes off of the road and focusing on something much closer.
By the time you realise you need to either bake or take avoiding action, it's too late.

If you are prepared just to have "real-time turn-by-turn voice guidance" without visual guidance, have a look at this:-

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

Austin - thats the safe way, I agree. one shouldn't look at all - just listen.

Its interesting that ergonomically, this 99p bit of plastic works very well... doesn't get in the way whatsoever on a thick modern steering wheel. And as its close, you could hear in an open top car.

But, as soon as one were to consider the need to have a power supply charger to stem the battery drain, it becomes dangerous and thus useless.

Re: minimalist satnav solutions?

I was thinking more of hiding the phone out of view rather than have it on the steering wheel and then using an earphone for the voice only sat nav.
