Re: What do I have

Simon.

I would worry about the numbers being on the mag side, that's not correct.

If you want to find the true age, posting us pictures would help.

For a 1927 the numbers are on the very front of the passenger side rail.

For a 1928 the numbers are around the rear engine mounting hole on the passenger side.

I'm sure others will give you more.

But with pictures of different parts of the chassis, you will get a rought age from the change over of verious parts.

Re: What do I have

Simon,

The Colonial Chassis seem to have the number stamped on the nearside rail in front of the engine mount up to the 1929, or not stamped at all (even though most UK historians deny that a chassis left the factory without a stamped chassis number).

The chassis number was often stencilled on the back face of the rear cross member although sometimes painted over in later restorations.

I personally haven't seen a chassis stamping under the magneto but it could be possible. Early Victorian 'Owners Certificates' only used the Engine Number for vehicle identification.

Cheers, Tony.

Re: What do I have

Simon,

The aluminium plates screwed on the fire wall look to be original square cornered type and should be stamped with the engine and chassis number - although on Australian built bodies (your car has the raised swage line of a local body) these were usually affixed to the nearside door hinge pillar inside the car.

If you can bring the car to the Clubrooms we might be better able to date it.

Cheers, Tony.

Re: What do I have

Thanks Tony,
The body is a "Propert", the chassis has been repainted at some stage, the only stamped numbers are under the mag mount as mention, we have been over every square inch looking for the numbers on the left hand side rail. Is there any knowable people in the geelong region that may be keen to come and have a look? I will eventually join the Melbourne A7 club, but I am already a member of 3 other clubs.. what's one more. Thank again

Re: What do I have

The aluminium plates on the firewall have been rather over polished and the printing has almost disappeared but seem to be original.

Car no. A6 3486

Chassis no. 61133 (overstamped with '340')

These numbers match existing cars on the Register and show it to be made in 1928.
A7CA Register is here http://a7ca.org/chassis-register/

I would look for a stamped number on a magneto chassis on the LH front chassis rail by the front engine mounting.
See here, "Quote these numbers" http://a7ca.org/downloads/QuoteThisNumber.pdf

Re: What do I have

Thank you everyone for your input, I have updated some more pictures of the chassis, the best I could get. There is definitely no numbers stamped on the left hand side.

Re: What do I have

Tony P _ re the plates being attached to the door pillar - I thought from 1927 on they were rivetted to the front face of the firewall? Hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong. Cheers, Bill

Re: What do I have

Bill,

You could be right, the 1928 Chummy has non original plates held on the firewall with screws (put on by a previous owner) and has been re-upholstered on the pillar so no marks visible.

The 1929 fabric Saloon has the plates on the door pillar.

Re: What do I have

I have up dated a picture of the dash on photobucket. It's on the lower left hand side.
