The spring is in the right position. The right angle bend in the bottom leg goes behind the right angle lip on the intake cover plate, that sits on the studs, so as to spring the strangler plate open.

Diagrams of the workings of Zenith carbs are not now common. The Seven differs from many in that the idle air is regulated rather than the final idle mixture. Some air comes from the tiny drilling at top of the emulsion block, and some from the lid via the adjustment. If the join between lid and base is not close air also accesses the slow jet there. So the lid must be flat and free of bubbles in the zinc etc. Many other makes use a gasket, which could make.

The muck metal is unstable with heat and age. It is common for old Zeniths esp off other makes to have bowed lids, hence the 1mm gap. Probably little influences operation, although if not flat may get excessive leakage under lid. Some authoritative sources reckon with heat and bumps the zinc can be persuaded back to normal but I have not tried....

I have an old Newnes manual which lists 26VEH for the Seven and a sidedraught type other than 26VA has been mentioned on forum, with the opinion that not so good. Possibly these are the carbs with two protrusions on bottom of bowl. The 26VE on Ten has protrusions and seems to have no removable capacity tube or vent. What applied to Seven version? Curiously the Seven is listed as strangler whereas the Ten has a different starter gadget.
