magneto/coil conversion

One of my cars has a mag/coil conversion fitted. Its an original Lucas item not the Austin Reproduction Parts one, but I'd guess they are the same. I need to remove the distributor to fit a new one,but when I tried it comes out about 1/4 inch then hits a hard stop. Now, I can just completely disassemble the thing and find out whats wrong, but before I do I just thought I'd ask - has anyone done this? Is there something like a screw I've missed? Answers on a postcard please, and thanks.
