Distributor / wiring

Hi I am restoring a 1934 box saloon delux, which distributor should be fitted, DK4. Or DK4A I have one of both???
Did this model have a wiring loom or aluminium bound wires??
Trevor

Re: Distributor / wiring

Hello Trevor. I think it should be the DJ distributor to permit manual advance/retard.
The wiring was originally aluminium wire bound - see the Seven Workshop website.
Congratulations on winning the award at Wollaton - No 3 son says you've set the benchmark for finishing and sign writing.
Best regards

Re: Distributor / wiring

Strongly recommend the original manual advance. Ideally with a spring to take backlash out of the linkage. If bushes in good order, spark is more stable than with centrifugal advance, which is affected by rubbing friction etc.

Can select minimum advance necessary for performance, or a little less ,and thus ensure optimum smoothness and life. Sevens spend little time slogging at low rpm so for standard non sports, once underway, one setting suffices for most running.

Gives you something to play with whilst waiting for acceleration or grinding up hills, or exploring top speed. Can achieve a super slow and sure idle if so desire. And can use to avoid double declutch gear changes at awkward moments. By setting up for some over advance can even emulate a vacuum advance. Useful in economy runs.

With an auto distributor, without a myriad test runs in identical conditions, never sure if max advance or curve the optimum compromise.

Important that the condenser and distributor earthed.

Can be instructive to establish where on the lever tdc is.

Re: Distributor / wiring

If you only have an auto distributor, retain the manual as an override adjustment. Especially if worn or characteristics suspect, an auto can be locked and disabled
