What a palaver! It just makes me realise how fortunate we are in the UK. Can you run a pre-war car in a normal manner in France?

Oh, I Knew it would come to this.

Yes you can, but then it has to be subjected to the same rules applicable top everyone else. In France your car has to undergo a "Contrôle Technique" every 2 years after its 4 years old. This is quite stringent and most oldies won't meet the emission requirements, neddles to say the braking efficiency standards!

It's difficult to get Insurance unless you're on a "Collectors' log book. There are specialist insurers (like Boncasters) but they're only interested if the Carte Grise is marked 'Collection'

Mine costs 43€ for the year (£30)

BUT - in 2008 the system will change, in that the Carte Grise Collection will allow you the travel anywhere in France. Downside is that the cars will be subjected to a Controle Technigue (MOT) every 5 years. So all of us will have to go on our bended knees to the testing centre, but I'm sure we will soon find out which are the sympathetic testers. They have already delayed this change by one year and no doubt it will slip again when they realise that all the old cars will fail the test!

Salut Don, j'habite à St Florent sur Auzonnet, dans le Gard (44,24456°N; 4,10550°E pour ceux qui ont un navigateur GPS). J'ai aussi une 2CV, mais la mienne est une 'Acadiane'.... pas de bêtes, mais plusieurs motos (trial) et un Velo-Solex. Peut être on peut faire RDV avec les "amis des Austin" un jour?

Naomi..... most translation programs are crap. What Don said was "il y a une femme quelque part aussi..." which means " There is a wife in there somewhere as well".

The problem with French is that it doesn't always translate literally, and it isn't helped if it's typed without the accents - for example 'ou' or 'où' mean two completely different things - the first means 'OR' and the second 'WHERE'

But 7/10 for a good effort!

Thank you Recky, I recieve a lot of emails in other languages from Europe, and the only way I can cope is using the web based translation services, especially if I'm working 'out of hours' or trying to come to grips the any of the scandinavian texts.

When I was in France last year (twice) I tried using their keyboards at internet cafes, took a bit of time getting use to them, what's wrong with qwerty.......

I try to be helpfull, indeed many people have told me how trying I can be.......
