Camphour tablets

A colleague at work said he can recall a workmate putting camphour tablets(moth balls) into the petrol tank of a Austin 12/16 in the 1960's . Something to do with leaded, unleaded petrol. Does anyone else know of this practice.

Stephen,

I should think it stops coughing due to carburettor freezing.

Re: Re: Camphour tablets

I know of butterflies in carburetters, but moths in the petrol? Cheers, Bill

Murphs?

Re: Camphour tablets

Never heard of putting camphor in petrol but using moth balls (which is naphthalene) is an old trick for boosting the octane rating of petrol to give you more oomph! Doesn't work as a lead additive to unleaded as it contains no lead (or lead substitutes)....
