Block preparation

I am collecting bits to build up the new engine for the Chummy. Over the weekend I choose a good block to use.

On removing the water manifold from the side I revealed the following...

I had to remove a good mugful of rusty crud (look at some of it on top of the vice jaw), always worth checking! Does anyone have any suggestions as to stabilising the rust already there, I have heard of using central heating rust inhibiter, all suggestions and experiences welcomed.

Re: Block preparation

Hi Ruairidh,

try using ' DeOx -C ', it is an excellent rust remover rather than a converter, after soaking the block in it for a day or two the rust will all come away leaving clean cast iron. If you then use a rust inhibitor Anti freeze it should last as long as your good self, if not longer.

you will find info at

regards to you both

Re: Block preparation

Ruairidh,For many years now I have put in "Bars Leak" in the water as it has a Soluable oil in it . THis stops aluminium corrosion and stablisises the rust to very good effect. Rad inhibitor should be good actually. i wonder what is in it.?Mac
